an old book

Our comments on this book:
Genealogy a word that many are familiar with today as they delve into their family histories and rejoice in the knowledge of their ancestors.
But what about your spiritual ancestry? Have you ever considered who the ancient/ SDAs were? Would you like to know?
You probably are aware of Seth and Noah and Abraham, Moses and Ezra and Nehemiah, Elijah and Elisha, Peter and Paul and John, etc. You may even have heard of Eusebius of Syria, and Patrick of Ireland and Columba of Scotland. (Not the Roman Catholic versions but the real truth of their lives.)
But do you know of Lucian of Syria who gave us our Protestant Bible, of Dinooth in Wales, Aidan in England, Columbanus in Europe, Aba in Persia, Timothy in Bagdad, the St Thomas Christians in India, Adam in China, Ghengis Khan in Asia, Kublai Khan in China (yes, these two had more to do with Christianity than you may think), Marcos and Shan-tao of China, and Kobo Daishi in Japan, and others in the Phillipines and Indonesia? All ancient/ SDA's and therefore your spiritual brothers.
When Jesus said,
"Go you into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."
He meant it so they did. And they kept on doing it.
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 to the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse:
Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which you have to all the saints, 5 for the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; 6 which is come to you, AS IT IS IN ALL THE WORLD; and brings forth fruit, as it does also in you, since the day you heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth
6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren to the rulers of the city, crying, "THESE THAT HAVE TURNED THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN are come hither also; 7 whom Jason has received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus."
The thrilling stories of these missionaries in the church during the years from 538 to 1798 are told in an old book entitled "The Church Triumphant" .
On to Author's preface
Note from the book:
"Lucian [250-312AD] might be likened to the founders of the American republic. As authors of the American Declaration of Independence and that part of the Constitution known as the Bill of Rights, they gave the nation written documents upon which to build the state."
"So Lucian, in an hour when documentary confusion was threatening chaos, defended, preserved, and passed on to other generations the true text of the Holy Scriptures." [This was translated by Erasmus in Martin Luther's time and passed on to the Protestants, who before that had to rely on Latin translations.]
"He also left a masterpiece of theology to evangelical believers. He stimulated and vivified correct church organization and methods of evangelization. Although his opponents have seen to it that not much history about him has been preserved, yet they cannot rob him of his great works."
"Lucian was born at Antioch, a center of Greek life and culture. In his day, Rome [the nation] ruled supreme. Truth Triumphant, page 45." [Back to the text]
Christians in China c. 1275 - 1291
“The Polos had journeyed from Venice “quite three years and a half” to kneel before Kublai [Khan]. He was, Marco [Polo] told Europeans (who knew next to nothing of him), “the most powerful man in people and lands and in treasure that ever was in the world” – probably not an exaggeration.”
“As Marco recounts the first audience at court [in China], Kublai was an unmagisterial Mister Congeniality, spouting pleasantries: Welcome, gentlemen! Please stand up. How’ve you been? How was the trip? In fact, Kublai probably considered it a great honor that Europeans – rare in China – had made the arduous journey to his court.”
“Niccolo [Marco’s father] and Maffeo [Marco’s uncle] already had traveled once to Kublai’s empire, and the monarch had asked them to return with a hundred wise men to preach Christianity. Like his grandfather, Genghis Khan, Kublai was generally tolerant of all faiths; quite a few of his kin were Christians of the eastern Nestorian sect.”
National Geographic, June 2001, pages 31-32. [Back to the text]
“As for Marco, according to the book (Marco’s writings), Kublai employed him as a courier not only in China but to other Asian kingdoms. He employed thousands of foreigners, especially Persians and Arabs, as administrators. These se mu, or “colored eyes” ranked below Mongols in Kublai’s dynasty, but above Chinese officials, who were not trusted.” National Geographic, June 2001, page 33.
