Who/what is this "fit" man and what makes him "fit"?

Let’s review what we know about the "fit man".

He represents the last group of Christians who are alive just before the second coming. He is the only one who "works" during the ceremony of cleansing on the Day of Atonement. It is his job to care for the scapegoat (Satan) in the courtyard (on earth) while the high priest (Jesus) is cleansing the second apartment in the sanctuary (in heaven), and during the seven last plagues.

But what does this mean in literal fact? It is written:-

Psalm 119:95-98

95 The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider Your testimonies. 96 I have seen an end [the result] of all perfection: but Your commandment is exceeding broad. 97 O how love I Your law! it is my meditation all the day. 98 You through Your commandments have made me wiser than my enemies: for they [the commandments] are ever with me.

From the very beginning of the great controversy in heaven it has been Satan's purpose to overthrow the law of God because of its importance as a safety "net" for the righteous, and to substitute in its place what is known as "independence". In God’s kingdom individualism is great, but independence is dangerous. As "children of God" in this world we need guidance and guidelines.

It was to accomplish this change that Lucifer entered upon his rebellion against the Creator, and after he left heaven (his home) he has continued the same warfare upon the earth. To deceive men and women, and thus lead them to transgress God's law, is the object which he has steadfastly pursued. He is the ultimate "street kid", the head of the gang, and that is his aim.

Whether this is accomplished by casting aside the law altogether, or by rejecting only one of its precepts, the result will be ultimately the same. He or she that offends "in one point," shows contempt for the whole law; their influence and example are on the side of transgression; they become "guilty of all" as we are told.

James 2:8-12

8 If you fulfil the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself", you do well: 9 but if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

10 FOR WHOEVER SHALL KEEP THE WHOLE LAW, AND YET OFFEND IN ONE POINT, HE IS GUILTY OF ALL. 11 For He that said, "Do not commit adultery", said also, "Do not kill." Now if you commit no adultery, yet if you kill, you are become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak you, and so do, as they that shall be judged by THE LAW OF LIBERTY.

The place of the Bible

In seeking to cast contempt upon the divine statutes, Satan has also perverted many of the doctrines of the Bible, and errors have thus become incorporated into the faith of thousands who profess to believe the Scriptures. The last great conflict between truth and error is but the final struggle of the long-standing controversy concerning the law of God.

Upon this final battle we are now entering - a battle between the laws of men and the law of God, between the religion of the Bible and the religion of fable and tradition.

The Bible is within the reach of all, but there are few who really accept it as the guide of life. Disbelief in its teachings prevails to an alarming extent, not in the world merely, but also in the professed Christian churches.

Many in the churches have come to deny doctrines which are the very pillars of the Christian faith. The great facts of creation as presented by the inspired writers, the fall of man, the atonement, and the perpetuity of the law of God, are rejected in practice, either wholly or in part, by a large share of the professedly Christian world. Not until faith in the written word is restored will we be able to live by the spoken one.

The immortal soul

And the great lie of the immortality of the soul has been accepted by nearly every race. That amazing lie, "You shall NOT surely die" echoes from every point today. Yet it is written:-

Genesis 2:16-17

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof YOU SHALL SURELY DIE [forever].

Genesis 3:4-5

4 And the serpent said to the woman, "You shall NOT surely die [the exact opposite of God’s word]: 5 for God knows that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."

Much later God said again,

Ezekiel 18:4-24

4 Behold, all souls are Mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is Mine: THE SOUL THAT SINS, IT SHALL DIE [the second death].

5 But if a man [or woman] be just, and do that which is lawful and right…

9 [if he or she] has walked in My statutes [laws], and has kept My judgments [daily advices], to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live [in eternity], says the Lord GOD….

20 THE SOUL THAT SINS, IT SHALL DIE. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he has committed [repent and accept justification], and keep all My statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22 All his transgressions that he has committed [in his old life], they shall not be mentioned to him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live.

23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? says the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24 But [note carefully] when the righteous turn away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity [rejects justification], and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All his righteousness that he has done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them shall he die.

Thousands who pride themselves upon their wisdom and independence regard it as an evidence of weakness to place implicit confidence in the Bible. They think they are "gods", or originators. They think it a proof of superior talent and learning to criticise the Scriptures and to spiritualise and explain away their most important truths.

At the same time, many ministers are teaching their people, and many professors of religion and teachers of the Bible are instructing their students that the law of God has been changed, or put aside. Those who regard its requirements as still valid, to be literally obeyed, are thought to be deserving only of ridicule or contempt.

And this is where the "fit man" of Leviticus 16 comes in.

Leviticus 16:21-22

21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him ALL the iniquities of the children of Israel, and ALL their transgressions in ALL their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and SHALL SEND HIM AWAY BY THE HAND OF A FIT MAN into the wilderness: 22 and the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities to a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat [alive] in the wilderness.

In rejecting the word of truth, men reject its Author and it then becomes necessary to reach them another way. See Matthew 5:16. The principle is set out in the following words.

John 10:37-38

37 If I do not the works of My Father, believe Me not. 38 But if I do, though you believe not Me, believe the works: that you may know, and believe, that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.

Thus obedience to God and the performance of good works are indicators of God’s presence and His truth.

However, wherever the divine precepts are rejected, sin ceases to appear sinful, or righteousness desirable. Romans 7:7.

Those who refuse to submit to the government of God are wholly unfitted to govern themselves although they do not admit this, and cling to what they call their national "spirit". Worse than that, through their destructive teachings the spirit of insubordination is implanted in the hearts of children and youth, who are naturally impatient of control; and a lawless, licentious state of society results. While scoffing at the credulity of those who obey the requirements of God, the multitudes of professed Christians eagerly accept the delusions of Satan. They give the rein to lust and practice the sins which have called down judgments upon the heathen.

The statement made regarding the people of old still applies today.

2 Kings 17:15

And they rejected His statutes, and His covenant that He made with their fathers, and His testimonies which He testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain [and proud], and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them.

All this must be shown in contrast to God’s ideal of righteousness. The "fit man" must "hold the scapegoat" while Jesus is cleansing the sins of His people, and then he must lead him away. They, the last generation of Christians will do this by upholding the Ten Commandments as a rule of life, and by living them in public view just before the second coming.

But there is no use of force in God’s kingdom. They will not "hold" Satan captive against his will. On the contrary, Satan will have all the freedom he wants to convince people otherwise. However, his whole attention will eventually be focussed on the last generation of God’s kingdom, the 144,000 living Sabbath-keeping Christians who are scattered all over the face of the earth, for he cannot stand opposition.

Revelation 7:1-4

1 And after these things I saw four [good] angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea [by letting go], 3 saying, "Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads [they have a mental understanding as well as a heart acceptance]."

4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed a hundred and forty-four thousand of all the [spiritual] tribes of the children of Israel.

Thus, all over the world there will be small groups of Christians showing the light and gaining Satan’s attention. Of them it is written:

Isaiah 58:11-14

11 And the LORD shall guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and make fat your bones: and you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

12 And they that shall be of you shall build the old waste places: you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called, "The repairer of the breach [in the law], The restorer of paths to dwell in", 13 IF YOU TURN AWAY YOUR FOOT FROM THE SABBATH, FROM DOING YOUR [OWN] PLEASURE ON MY HOLY DAY; AND CALL THE SABBATH A DELIGHT, THE HOLY OF THE LORD, honourable; and shall honour Him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words.

14 Then shall you delight yourself in the LORD; and I will cause you to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father: for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.

Hell and the Sabbath

The false doctrine of eternal torment in hell and purgatory has led many to disbelieve the Bible. And as the promises of the Ten Commandments are urged upon the people to counteract this idea, it will be found that the observance of the seventh-day Sabbath (Saturday) is asked for. As the only way to free themselves from a duty which they are unwilling to perform, many popular religious teachers will declare (even more than they do now) that the law of God is no longer binding.

Thus they will cast away the law and the Sabbath together.

The work of Sabbath reform will extend however, and this rejection of the divine law to avoid the claims of the fourth commandment will become world-wide. The teachings of religious leaders have already opened the door to unfaithfulness, to spiritualism, and to contempt for God's holy law; and upon these leaders rests a fearful responsibility for the large scale iniquity that exists in the Christian world. Yet this very class will put forth the claim that the fast-spreading corruption is largely attributable to the desecration of the so-called "Christian sabbath (Sunday)," and that the enforcement of Sunday observance by civil law would greatly improve the morals of society. (All this has been done many times in the past.)

This claim will be especially urged in America (and has been for many years already), where the doctrine of the true seventh-day Sabbath has been most widely preached.

No union

The leaders of the Sunday movement may advocate other reforms which the people need, even principles which are in harmony with the Bible and which will lead to church unity. Yet, while there is with these a requirement which is contrary to God's law, His servants cannot unite with them.

Nothing can justify them in setting aside the commandments of God for the precepts of men. However, their resistance will be classed by the various religions and governments as "disobedience", it will be spoken of as being against the good of the nation, and they will eventually be treated as "outlaws". This situation between Christians and state has often occurred in history, and is still occurring today in some countries (but not necessarily over the Sabbath question). However the last battle will be centred about this important issue, with some side topics as well.

The three-fold union

Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people totally under his deceptions even while he is being "held" by the "fit man" in the courtyard. While the former doctrine lays the foundation of spiritualism (life after death), the latter creates a bond of sympathy with the Roman Catholic church which openly boasts that she has changed the day of worship.

The Protestant churches of the United States will be the leaders in this work. They are already stretching their hands across the gulf to grasp the hand of spiritualism by accepting the lie of the immortal soul (this is nearly universally accepted already). Then they will reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power; and under the influence of this threefold union (Protestantism, Spiritualism and Romanism), the Federation of the United States of America will follow in the steps of ancient/ Rome in trampling on the rights of individual conscience, "for the good of the nation".

As spiritualism more closely imitates the nominal Christianity of today, it has greater power to deceive and ensnare. Satan himself will be converted, after the modern order of things. The Spirit told us...

2 Corinthians 11:12-15

12 [Paul wrote] But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion [the spotlight] from them which desire occasion [desire to be looked up to]; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we. 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

He will literally appear in the character of an angel of light in various places throughout the world. Through the agency of spiritualism, miracles will be wrought, the sick will be healed, and many undeniable wonders will be performed by he and his followers. (As he makes some sick so he can heal some!)

And as the spirits will profess faith in the Bible, and show respect for the institutions of the church, their work will be accepted by the majority as a manifestation of divine power. This will make it easier for other nations and religions to follow the lead of the Protestant churches in the United States in the battle for men’s minds.

Revelation 13:11-14

11 And I beheld another "beast" [an animal symbol of a civil system operating through a religion] coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb [he looked peaceful at the beginning], and [yet later] he spoke as a "dragon" [Revelation 12:9]. 12 And he exercises all the power of the first "beast" before [in front of] him, and causes the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first "beast", whose deadly wound was healed.

13 And he does great wonders, so that he makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14 and deceives them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the [first] "beast"; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to [copy of] the [first] "beast" [they should follow its way in religious behaviour], which had the wound by a sword [the Bible], and [yet] did live [in men’s eyes].

The difference

Because the last "generation" of Christians are "fit" they will be able to take all that Satan throws at them without giving in. They have practised with their Lord and are prepared, as many other great Christians have been in the past. The difference between this conflict and all the past battles of the ages is that this time the Saviour will stop dispensing forgiveness (the queue of confessors wanting it has ceased) and He will be engaged in the cleansing.

This means in practice that the 144,000 will not be able to commit a sin and be forgiven for it from the time Jesus begins to cleanse until His return to earth. (Of course, like all the other Christians they won’t sin after the second coming either, but that is due to the change of body!) But during the testing period before the second advent, they will have to live in their present human nature solely by the word of God which says they can do it, and by this power they will remain sinless. As they claim His promises at that time, they will find, like Peter, that they can walk anywhere and do anything. It is not their "fight" with Satan, but their "acceptance" of the power of God’s word which will settle the issue.

This way of living will give great impetus to their call for the people to return to the creator God. Revelation 14:6-7.

This has always been the message of the Bible. The Son of God has just been waiting for some Christians to believe it!

1 Peter 1:3 – 2:25

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fades not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 WHO ARE KEPT BY THE POWER OF GOD through faith to salvation [redemption] ready to be revealed in the last time [just before the second coming].

6 Wherein [in this] you greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, you are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7 that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found to praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. 8 Whom having not seen [in the flesh], you love; in whom, though now you see Him not, yet believing, you rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 9 receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation [redemption] of your souls.

10 Of which salvation the prophets [of the past] have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come to you: 11 searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify [or mean], when it testified beforehand [about] the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow [that example]. 12 To whom it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to us they did minister the things, which are now reported to you by them that have preached the gospel to you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.

13 Wherefore [for this reason] gird up the loins of your mind, be sober [serious], and hope to the end ["work - practise" it all your life while waiting] for the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance. 15 But as He which has called you is holy, so be you holy [perfect] in all manner of conversation [conduct]. 16 Because it is written, "Be you holy; for [because] I am holy [and I am "in" you. Colossians 1:27.]"

17 And if you call on the Father, who without respect of persons judges according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear [in careful regard for His way]: 18 forasmuch as you know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation [behaviour] received by tradition from your fathers; 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

20 Who verily [truly] was foreordained before the foundation of the world [Revelation 13:8], but was manifest [shown] in these last times for you, 21 who by Him do believe in God [the power of divinity], that raised Him up from the dead, and gave Him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God [and in His power].

22 Seeing you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit to unfeigned love of the brethren, see that you [continue to] love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23 being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which lives and abides for ever.

24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower of it falls away: 25 but the word of the Lord endures for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached to you.

Chapter 2:1-16

1 Wherefore [because of this] laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2 as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that you may grow thereby: 3 if so be you have tasted that the Lord is gracious [full of gifts].

4 To Whom coming, as to a living Stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 6 Wherefore [which is why] also it is contained in the Scripture, "Behold, I lay in Sion [the church] a chief corner Stone, elect, precious: and he [or she] that believes on Him shall not be confounded [or overcome].

7 To you therefore which believe He is precious: but to them which be disobedient, the Stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the Head of the corner, 8 and a Stone of stumbling, and a Rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should SHOW FORTH the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvellous light: 10 which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims [in the world], abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; 12 having your conversation [conduct] honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation [at the second coming].

13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance [authority figure] of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; 14 or to governors, as to them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers [police etc.], and for the praise of them that do well. 15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.

16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God [not independents].

[The only time you may disobey their laws is when they try to take over God’s position and pass edicts which contradict His requirements. Even then, you can only claim immunity because you belong to His kingdom and not theirs, and they have no right to ask for such behaviour from you. It is really a disagreement between sovereigns, and not between you and the state, and they must "fight" it out.]

Luke 12:11-12

11 And when they bring you to the synagogues, and to magistrates, and powers, take you no thought how or what thing you shall answer, or what you shall say: 12 for the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you ought to say.

Peter’s words continue.

1 Peter 2:17-25

17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

Accept religious persecution without retaliation

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward [unlikeable]. 19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what glory is it, if, when you be buffeted for your faults, you shall take it patiently? But if, when you do well, and suffer for it, you take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

21 For even hereunto were you called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth: 23 Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed Himself to Him that judges righteously. 24 Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live to righteousness: by whose stripes you were healed. 25 For you were as sheep going astray; but are now returned to the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

So, it’s that simple! Trust so fully in God’s promises that you can do ALL things through Christ and nothing of yourself, and it will be done. Be like the man in this story.

Mark 9:22-24

22 [he said] " … if You can do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us." 23 Jesus said to him, "If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes." 24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, "Lord, I believe; help You my unbelief." [Teach me to trust and obey.]

If we do that then we can be one of the 144,000 (who together are the one "fit" man), and be there in the courtyard to co-operate with Christ while He cleanses inside the heavenly sanctuary.

Of course, all this preaching will be useless if we do not have the understanding of the Sabbath "rest" principle.

Put simply, this is the fact that true Christians do not try to do anything in righteousness in their own strength, but simply follow the Spirit’s instructions moment by moment, expecting Him to supply the power to obey. In this way they can "walk on water", or anything else He suggests. John 5:30.

The moment we try our own works or ideas, then we shall "sink". So the practise now is to teach us HOW to rely on God’s word in all situations. We should welcome all temptations and trials knowing that the practise of them will eventually be the means by which the second coming will be able to be accomplished.

Romans 5:1-5

1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God [Sabbath rest] through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation works [produces] patience; 4 and patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 and hope makes not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given to us.

This experience produced in John the ability to record for us the future of the Christian church.

Revelation 1:9-11

9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos [in prison exile], for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day [enjoying the Sabbath rest], and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,11 saying, "I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last": and, "What you see, write in a book, and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia; to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamos, and to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea."

May you be like him and be able "help" your LORD, for now it is our "turn", because the church at Laodicea is representative of the church of the last days.

It is important for us as Christians to realise that WE are NOT waiting for a second coming at God's choice of time, but that Christ is waiting for us to bring about the situation whereby He can come. When we take God at His word and live His promises, putting away all sins in His strength, we can do what is required of us. Our Saviour has waited some 6,000 years and He will go on waiting if need be, for the request to be forgiven to cease.

The work typified by the "fit man" must be entered into BEFORE the second coming.

Who wants to add (or subtract!) from these thoughts? I won't argue as I have stated, but I will publish your Scriptures so that we may review all the words of God on the subject.

Spiritual Dictionary:

The work of the "fit" man:

Leviticus 16:21-22

The fit man (the last generation of Christians) does what no other Christian can do (they are all dead) at that time (just before the second coming). He cares for the scapegoat (the devil) during the cleansing of the sanctuary and the falling of the seven last plagues, and then leads him into the wilderness (of a forsaken earth) after the high priest (Jesus) has loaded him with the sins of the people.

It is the "fit" man's work to show that Christians using the power of God can stop sinning and live without error or mistake.

How do we, as believers in a creator God, answer such a thought?
