Thought for the Month

June 1997

Next up-date: 1st July 1997 (God willing).

Query:

"What is man that You are mindful of him? Or the son of man (his descendants), that You visit him? You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honour, and did set him over the works of Your hands..." Hebrews 2:6-7.

What was God's purpose in creating Adam and Eve and then giving them the ability to pro-create which is normally only the prerogative of a God?

Response:

The Scripture quoted goes on the reveal that man does not now have "all things put under him", but we do see Jesus Christ in charge by virtue of His sacrifice. Verses 8-9. So things have changed to the point where the sons and daughters of man have become the sons and daughters of God, and Jesus "is not ashamed to call them brethren." Verse 11. How has this come about?

In Genesis 1:28 God told Adam and Eve to "be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it"; "master it", is the Jewish translation, meaning to control it as Abraham was master of his house, Genesis 24:12.

The quote above from Hebrews tells us that Adam and Eve were made a little lower than the angels, and yet set over the works of His hands. So they were in charge of the entire world as parents are in charge of their family.

But their other purpose was to produce a group of righteous descendants who were to replace the third of the angels who had rebelled in heaven and who had left to set up their own kingdom under their own rules. Revelation 12:4, 7-8 and note carefully Jude 6. God knew that the rebellious angels would self-destruct in time as He told their leader through a message to the king of Tyre. "You have defiled your sanctuaries [bodies] by the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your traffic [behaviour], therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of you, it shall devour you..." Ezekiel 28:18.

Moses said of the people of his time, "For I know your rebellion, and your stiff neck [pride]: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, you have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?" Deuteronomy 31:27. Our Father did not wish this to happen because of its result, and He showed this as He pleaded with another rebellious group later, "Why will you die, O house of Israel? I have no pleasure in the death of him that dies". Ezekiel 18:31-32.

To enable Adam and Eve to produce the replacement group God gave them the ability to pro-create and produce life from their life. It was for this reason that the female part of Adam was separated and marriage introduced as we are told in Genesis 2:21-25. The original Adam now stood in two different bodies, but a union of those two would produce a third entity. This God-given gift had not been available to the rest of the universe because it had not been needed before the rebellion, but now God wished to have replacements ready to take the place of the rebels and this was how He did it.

Jesus explained this to us when He answered a question regarding the resurrection.

"Jesus answered and said unto them, You do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven". Matthew 22:29-30.

Thus we see that marriage and its fruit is not needed in the new world, for God's kingdom will again be complete at that time.

Marriage is "till death do us part" for by then it has served its purpose.

Not even the rebellion of Adam could stop God's plans, for he did not "fall" but "jumped"! See 1 Timothy 2:14. All Adam's sin could do was delay God's intention for the human race. It is a sad fact of history that rebellion is the norm in this world. "the wicked [rebels] are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies". Psalm 58:3. And it this rebellion that has led to the extra length of time needed for God's plan to work out. God said that He would have to "greatly multiply" the conception rate of women to enable the righteous ones to be produced because so many of the offspring of Adam and Eve would choose not to follow God's advice.

Conclusion:

God's plan for humanity, which Adam disrupted when he chose to disobey and steal from his Father, will be fulfilled in the new species called 'Christians'. Thus it is written, "But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?" 1 Peter 4:15-18.

These people, not now children of Adam and Eve (the sons and daughters of man, murderers, thieves, evildoers), but children of Jesus Christ (the sons and daughters of God, peacemakers Matthew 5:9), are the ones whom God is now able to bless. It is they who will bring the universe back to normality and fulfill their destiny.

Humanity:

Hebrews 2:6-7. It was God's purpose to replace the rebellious angels with the human family, if they had shown themselves obedient to His every word. This purpose has now been passed on to the Christians who do just that. See 1 John 3:9-18.

Next thought. To be discussed from 1 July.

Hebrews 6:1-3. "Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on to perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit".

What do these words mean? Perfection - dead works - baptisms (in the plural) etc.
