Some perpetual questions ....

Is there really an immortal soul?

Do you know the difference between the "love" that is of Christianity
and the "love" that is of the world?

Click on the link for a good book on the character of our God which you can download for free and share amongst your friends.   It's called "Light on the Dark Side of God" and is one of the best books on this subject that I have ever read!

(Unfortunately, the above book is no longer available as a free download.  I will endeavour to find a site where you may buy it, for it's really good!)

In the meantime, try this site.    And here's one where you can read it online.

Here's another great site on the character of God written in a way that's very easy to understand.

Some of the comments on this page are adapted from books in my library.  No recognition is given because they are not intended as authorities, but are used because they express my understanding clearly.

Revelation 14:6-7

And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, “Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters”.

Why did this message go out to all the world in the 1840’s, and who gave it?

The ideas which would eventually become the “Theory of Evolution” were being advocated by various people around the world as the nineteenth century began (Darwin travelled in 1835 and published his book in 1859), so God called the attention of His people to these verses to help them combat this new suggestion.  The idea of evolution had been around for many years, spurred on by the finding of enormous fossil bones, but was always in the background till this time.  So God now invited His people to publicly worship a creator God who has intelligently designed a world for them, but which has been marred by sin.  It is this damage that He is seeking to heal.

The Advent people in the years between 1833-1844 had preached very strongly all over the world that Christ would return for the Second Advent at the end of that time, and when He did not come they were then led by the Spirit to realise that this “angel’s” message was really theirs and that, among other things, they should be proclaiming that the judgment of the dead had begun in order to determine their fitness for the new world.

Thus the Son of God used their enthusiasm for their previous ideas to give impetus to the correct message.  It was His design to arouse His professed people, especially the leaders in the Protestant churches of the time, and bring them to a testing point, where they should decide publicly for or against the truth.  Some ministers were convinced of the correctness of the positions taken on the prophetic periods, and renounced their pride, and left their salaries and their churches to go forth from place to place to give the message of the soon coming.  But as the message from heaven could find a place in the hearts of only a few of the professed ministers of Christ, the work was also laid upon many who were not normally preachers.  Some believers left their fields to sound the message, while others were called from their shops and their merchandise.  And even some professional men were compelled by love to their fellow men to leave their professions to engage in the unpopular work of giving the first angel's message.

Those ministers who did heed the call laid aside their sectarian views and feelings and united in proclaiming the coming of Jesus.  Therefore the leading men and women of the advent movement spent many hours together studying their Bibles and pleading for a clearer understanding of what they should be doing to help Him in fulfilling His will.

Wherever the message was given, it moved the people, for it was A PART OF the everlasting gospel.  Sinners repented, wept, and prayed for forgiveness, and those whose lives had been marked with dishonesty were anxious to make restitution. Parents felt the deepest solicitude for their children. Those who received the message laboured with their unconverted friends and relatives, and with their hearts bowed with the weight of the solemn message, warned and entreated them to prepare for the coming of the Son of man.

All this was used by God to give light to the fact that the time of the judgment hour had arrived.

This thought, that there was a judgment which had to go on BEFORE the second coming could take place, was a new thought.  And yet it is plainly shown in the scripture, simply by reversing two verses.

 Revelation 22:12, 11

“And, behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be”.

“He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still”.

For Christ to bring a reward with Him it must be known who should receive it, and what they should be given.

Lateral thought:

It was rather like the separation of Judges 7:3-7 when twenty-two thousand soldiers left Gideon’s army and he had only ten thousand to fight with!  Then came another test and he had only three hundred!

***************(Begin Quote)

Judges 7:

16 And he [Gideon] divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.

17 And he said to them, “Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall you do. 18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow you the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, ‘The sword of the LORD [the words of the Bible], and of Gideon [it’s his too]’.”

19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came to the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers that were in their hands. 20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, ‘The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon’.

21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp [they did not attack the enemy]: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.

22 And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD set every man's sword against his fellow [the Midianites fought amongst themselves], even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abelmeholah, to Tabbath.

But the remnant were strong and determined and did what was expected of them!

However, as the clergy of the Protestant churches refused to receive the advent call and first angel's message, and began to persecute those who did believe in it, they rejected the light from heaven and fell from the favour of many of their followers.

Those Protestant denominations had always been part of “Babylon” (Satan’s religious system), but only the centre of that organization (the Roman Catholic Church) had been in a fallen condition in men’s eyes for the centuries since Martin Luther’s exposť, having received its “deadly wound”.  Revelation 13:3.  Now it was time that the “daughter” churches should be seen for what they were, for it is written, “And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH”.   Revelation 17:5.

Although professing to be the leaders of a great reformation, the groups started by the early reformers soon degenerated into the same satanic pattern of union of church and state, and manmade control, and some engaged in physically fighting with each other over differences in doctrine.

The Son of God had sent them a message, pleading with them to return to their roots, but it was ignored.

 Revelation 3:1-6.

And to the angel of the church in Sardis [approximately 1517-1844] write;

These things says He that has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars;

“I know your works, that you have a name [in men’s minds] that you live, and [yet in Mine] are dead.

2 “Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found your works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard, and hold fast, and repent.  If therefore you shall not watch, I will come on you as a thief [in the message of the 1840’s], and you shall not know what hour I will come upon you.

4 “You have a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white: for they are worthy.

5 “He that overcomes, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life [in the judgment, Daniel 7:10], but I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels.

6 “He that has a [spiritual] ear, let him hear what the Spirit said to the churches”.

***************(End Quote)

But they trusted to their own strength, and by opposing the first message placed themselves where they could not see the light of the second angel's message.  However, the beloved of God, who were oppressed by them, accepted it and reacted to the knowledge that “Babylon is fallen,”, and left their churches in accordance with the verse.  “And there followed another angel, saying, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication’.”  Revelation 14:8.  They returned to their reformation faith, and became a separate group, answering the call of God.  "And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, 'Come out of her, My people, that you be not partakers of her sins, and that you receive not of her plagues". Revelation 18:4.

Then they were led to see the difference between the beast and the Lamb!

Religious persecution is the hallmark of the seven-headed beast which represents Satan’s counterfeit church system, something which the Lamb of God (the Prince of peace, Isaiah 9:6) does not do.  God’s “wrath” is seen when He leaves others to their choice and they have to face the consequences, while the “wrath” of Babylon is expressed as conversion to their ideas under duress unto death, or excommunication.  (Daniel 3:15.)

The first angel’s message was given by the people of God at the right time to bring them back to the idea of a creator God, and One who had just started the judgment which was needed before the second coming.  The purpose of the message was to enable professed Christians to choose their belief, and follow either the LORD or Baal.  1 Kings 18:21.  The identity of each is shown most easily by their followers’ behaviour towards others.

Who wants to add (or subtract!) from these thoughts? I won't argue as I have stated, but I will publish your Scriptures so that we may review all the words of God on the subject.

Genesis 6:4

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Who were the giants of those days?
