Notes for

The Revelation

Chapter Twenty-two

Ezekiel 47:1-12

Afterward He brought me again to the door of the house [temple]; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. Then brought He me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without to the utter [outer] gate by the way that looks eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side.

And when the man [the angel helper] that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees.  Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins.

Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass [wade] over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.

And he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?” Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river. Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other. Then said he to me, “These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the [Dead] sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed. And it shall come to pass, that every thing that lives, which moves, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come there: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live where the river comes.”

“And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from Engedi even to Eneglaim; they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many. But the miry places of it and the marishes [marshes] of it shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt.”

“And by the river upon the bank of it, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat [food], whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit of it be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit of it shall be for meat, and the leaf of it for medicine.”

Psalm 36:7-9

How excellent is Your lovingkindness, O God!  Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of Your house; and You shall make them drink of the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life: in Your light shall we see light.

Psalm 46:4

There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.

Genesis 2:8-10

And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden . . .  And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became into four heads.

Today that tree is incorporated in the Bible and if we take a leaf each morning it will soothe and refresh us, filling our hearts with peace and joy.

Some have wondered why we have sanitariums and hospitals. "Why should we not, like Christ, pray for the sick that they may be healed miraculously?" Think about this.  If we were able to do this in all cases how many would appreciate the healing? Would those who were healed become health reformers, or continue to be health destroyers?  God desires that we live in conformity with His laws and thereby co-operate with Him in our recovery.

What is the curse?  It is the desire to do our own thing and exercise control over another's mind.  Only Christians know what true service is.

Matthew  20:25-28

But Jesus called them to Him, and said, “You know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; and whoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: even as the Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many.

4.  Because they have obediently served Him in this world.

5.  The Son of God has been waiting nearly 2,000 years since those words were written.

6.  We need to understand them to be able to keep them.

7.  John was so overcome with emotion that he forgot a great lesson that he had received earlier.

Revelation 19:9-10

And he said to me, “Write, Blessed are they which are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb.”  And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.” And I fell at his feet to worship him.  And he said to me, “See you do it not: I am your fellowservant, and of your brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Matthew 23:8

But be not you called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all you are brethren.

Angels are creatures as we are.  But do you remember this?

Daniel 2:46

Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours to him.

Revelation 1:1-3

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave to Him, to show to His servants things which must shortly come to pass; and He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John: who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

Blessed is he that reads, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

The first thing to see in these words is that the Son of God has shown us in The Revelation a series of events which began soon after the book was written.  They "shortly came to pass" and are continuing to do so.

Then we may also understand that God has been ready for the end ever since this revelation was given, about 2,000 years ago.

Matthew 22:2-6

The kingdom of heaven is like to a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.

Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, “Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come to the marriage.”  But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: and the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.

But by the time the understanding of Christians has reached the point in chapter twenty-two where we have arrived, the "time is at hand."

Matthew 7:21-23

Not every one that says to Me, “LORD, LORD,” shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of My Father which is in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, “LORD, LORD, have we not prophesied in Your name?  And in Your name have cast out devils?  And in Your name done many wonderful works?”

And then will I profess to them, “I never knew you: depart from Me, you that work iniquity.”

Those professed believers who come up to the time of trouble unprepared, will, in their despair, confess their sins before all in words of burning anguish, while the wicked exult over their distress.  The case of all such is hopeless.

When Christ stands up, and leaves the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary, then the time of trouble, the seven last plagues, commences, and the case of every soul is decided, and there will be no atoning sacrifice to cleanse from sin and pollution.

It is as Jesus leaves the most holy, that He speaks in tones of decision and kingly authority: "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still; and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still; and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still; and he that is holy, let him be holy still.  And behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be."

Those who have delayed a preparation for the day of God, cannot obtain it in the time of trouble, or at any future period.

Now is the time of the judgment of the great white throne.

Revelation 20:11-12

And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Deuteronomy 30:15-19

[Moses said] See, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil; in that I command you this day to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply: and the LORD your God shall bless you in the land whither you go to possess it.

But if your heart turn away, so that you will not hear, but shall be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce to you this day, that you shall surely perish, and that you shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither you pass over Jordan to go to possess it.

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live.

From God, the fountain of wisdom, proceeds all the knowledge that is of value to man, all that the intellect can grasp or retain. The fruit of the tree representing good and evil is not to be eagerly plucked, because it is recommended by one who was once a bright angel in glory. He has said that if men eat thereof, they shall know good and evil. But let it alone.

The true knowledge comes not from infidels or wicked men. The word of God is light and truth. The true light shines from Jesus Christ, who "lights every man that cometh into the world." From the Holy Spirit proceeds divine knowledge. He knows what humanity needs to promote peace, happiness, and restfulness here in this world, and secure eternal rest in the kingdom of God.

Back to The Revelation Chapter Twenty-two

Think of the infinite sacrifice that has made this salvation possible.

We should study the Word, that we may see more of its magnitude. Jesus Christ has bought us with a price. He laid aside His royal robe and His kingly crown in the heavenly courts. He clothed His divinity with humanity and came to this sin-cursed earth, that humanity might be a partaker of divinity, and, through obedience and love to God, might escape the corruption that is in the world through lust.

He has thrown His arms of infinite love around humanity, and will draw to Himself all who will come. But if some will persist in having their own way, He cannot bless them, for they will not come unto Him, that they might have life.  John 5:40.

There can be no excuse for those who lose eternal life, because it means they have failed repeatedly to respond to this gracious invitation.

Romans 10:16-20

But they have not all obeyed the gospel.  For Isaiah says, “LORD, who has believed our report?” So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

But I say, “Have they not heard?” Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.

But I say, “Did not Israel know?” First Moses says, “I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.” But Isaiah is very bold, and says, “I was found of them that sought Me not; I was made manifest to them that asked not after Me.”

Deuteronomy 4:1-2

Now therefore hearken, O Israel, to the statutes and to the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers gives you. You shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall you diminish ought from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

So how do we explain Scripture?  By letting Scripture explain itself. If we find a problem in the words, ask the Spirit to guide you another part of the Book which will give you the understanding.

2 Peter 3:11-14

Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in all holy conversation [conduct] and godliness, looking for and hasting to [hastening] the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness. Wherefore [for this reason], beloved, seeing that you look for such things, be diligent that you may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

It is our privilege to help hasten the coming of the LORD.
