Notes for

The Revelation

Chapter Twenty-one

1. This is now the consummation of the plan of redemption. Consider also the following verses.

2 Peter 3:10-15

But the day of the LORD will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in all holy conversation [conduct] and godliness, looking for and hasting to [hastening] the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness. Wherefore [for this reason], beloved, seeing that you look for such things, be diligent that you may be found of Him in peace, without spot, and blameless. And account that the longsuffering of our LORD is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given to him has written to you.

Proverbs 11:31

Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.

"No more sea" because there will be only lakes and rivers as at the beginning of creation.

Genesis 2:10

And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.

Zechariah 14:4, 10

And His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst of it toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. . . .  All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate to the place of the first gate, to the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel to the king's winepresses.

Leviticus 26:11-13

And I will set My tabernacle among you: and My soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you shall be My people. I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.

Isaiah 25:8

He will swallow up death in victory; and the LORD GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of His people shall He take away from off all the earth: for the LORD has spoken it.

Isaiah 35:10

And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

1 Corinthians 15:26

The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.   .  .  .

15:54   So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

John 17:24

Father, I will that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am; that they may behold My glory, which You have given Me: for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Revelation 7:17

For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them to living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

5.  Here we have a new creation in which all the creatures are

Colossians 1:12-19

Giving thanks to the Father, which has made us meet [fit] to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son: in whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins.

Who is the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn [the head] of every creature: for by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him.

And He is before [over] all things, and by Him all things consist. And He is the Head of the body, the church: who is the beginning [the top person], the Firstborn from the dead [literally the eighth]; that in all things He might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell.

7.   As we read in verse 2.  "And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband."  Both the city and its inhabitants are called the "bride of Christ".

Revelation 19:6-8

And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying,

Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigns.

Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to Him:

for the marriage of the Lamb is come,

and His wife has [now] made herself ready.

And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

8.  Compare these verses:

Ezekiel 40:1-6

In the twenty-fifth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten [about 572BC], in the selfsame day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and brought me there. In the visions of God brought He me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain [on which stood a temple], by which was as the frame of a city [Jerusalem] on the south.

And He brought me there, and, behold, there was a man [an angel], whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed; and he stood in the gate. And the man said to me, "Son of man, behold with your eyes, and hear with your ears, and set your heart upon all that I shall show you; for to the intent that I might show them to you are you brought here: declare all that you see to the house of Israel." [They needed to know about this temple].

And behold a wall on the outside of the house [the temple] round about, and in the man's hand a measuring reed of six cubits long [12ft] by the cubit and a hand breadth [2ft]: so he measured the breadth of the building, one reed; and the height, one reed. [12ft by 12ft]. Then came he to the gate which looks toward the east, and went up the stairs of it, and measured the threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad; and the other threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad.

Isaiah 24:21-23

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high [the fallen angels], and the kings of the earth upon the earth [the rejecters of salvation]. And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days [1,000 years] shall they be visited. [See Revelation 20]

Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before His ancient/s gloriously.

This effect was prophesied: First, so that men could be saved; and second, so that the saved could walk in and out freely.

Isaiah 60:11

Therefore your gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring to you the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.

Zechariah 14:7-11

But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.

And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be [the waters shall not stop].

And the LORD shall be King over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and His name one. All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it [the city] shall be lifted up [on a plateau], and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate to the place of the first gate, to the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel to the king's winepresses, and men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.

Isaiah 54:1-17

  • Sing, O barren, you that did not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, you that did not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, says the LORD. Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of your habitations: spare not, lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes; for you shall break forth on the right hand and on the left; and your seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.

  • Fear not; for you shall not be ashamed: neither be you confounded; for you shall not be put to shame: for you shall forget the shame of your youth, and shall not remember the reproach of your widowhood any more. For your Maker is your husband; the LORD of hosts is His name; and your Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall He be called.

  • For the LORD has called you as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when you were refused, says your God. For a small moment have I forsaken you; but with great mercies will I gather you. In a little wrath [a time of trouble] I hid My face from you for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on you, says the LORD your Redeemer. For this is as the waters of Noah to Me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with you, nor rebuke you.

  • For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed, says the LORD that has mercy on you. O you afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay your stones with fair colours, and lay your foundations with sapphires. And I will make your windows of agates, and your gates of carbuncles, and all your borders of pleasant stones. And all your children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of your children.

  • In righteousness shall you be established: you shall be far from oppression; for you shall not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near you. Behold, they [the rejecters] shall surely gather together, but not by Me: whoever shall gather together against you shall fall for your sake.
  • Behold, I have created the smith that blows the coals in the fire, and that brings forth an instrument for his work [of torture]; and I have created the waster to destroy. [Yet] no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall condemn.
  • This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of Me, says the LORD.

    Revelation 13:8

And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him [Satan], whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
