Notes for

The Revelation

Chapter Eleven

1. "a reed" = A measure of approximately 2 metres or 6ft.

"rod" = a straight measure (such as the Bible).

Back to The Revelation Chapter Eleven

2. This is an invitation for us to investigate thoroughly (with the straight line) the heavenly sanctuary.

Acts 7:47-50 God does not need an earthly house

But Solomon built Him an house. However the most High dwells not in temples made with hands; as says the prophet, Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool: what house will you build Me? says the Lord: or What is the place of My rest? Has not My hand made all these things?

Ezekiel 40:1-4 The building was only meant to teach lessons

In the twenty-fifth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten [by the Babylonians], in the selfsame day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and brought me there. In the visions of God brought He me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south [so the mountain was on the north].

And He brought me there, and, behold, there was a man [an angel], whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax [for long measures] in his hand, and a measuring reed [for short measures]; and he stood in the gate. And the man said to me, Son of man, behold with your eyes, and hear with your ears, and set your heart upon all that I shall show you; for to the intent that I might show them to you are you brought here: declare all that you see to the house of Israel.

Ezekiel 43:10-11

You son of man, show the house to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities: and let them measure the pattern. [The house is a picture of Jesus, the pattern is the Ten Commandments].

And if they be ashamed of all that they have done, show [or explain to] them the form of the house, and the fashion of it, and the goings out of it, and the comings in of it, and all the forms of it, and all the ordinances of it, and all the forms of it, and all the laws of it [in other words, all that these things mean]: and write it in their sight, that they may keep the whole form of it, and all the ordinances of it, and do them.

Hebrews 10:1-10 It was all a picture of Jesus and His work

For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the [real] things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? Because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience [or sense of guilt] of sins.

But in those [earthly] sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year, for it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore [for this reason] when He [Jesus] comes into the world, He says, Sacrifice and offering You would not, but a body have You prepared Me: in burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the Book it is written of Me,) to do Your will, O God.

Above [or before] when He said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin You would not, neither have pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; then [or after that] said He, Lo, I come to do Your will, O God. [This means that] He takes away the first [the ritual], that He may establish the second [the will of God]. By the which will [and not by ceremonies] we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Let us make sure that we "measure" with the "rod". These words are telling us what God told one of His other prophets. He did not want sacrifices and offerings in an earthly sanctuary in the first place! See Jeremiah 7:22-23.

Our attention should be on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2), but if we need extra help with this then the heavenly sanctuary is the place to look.

Back to The Revelation Chapter Eleven

3. The brass altar in the courtyard is the place where God depicted the sacrifice of Jesus. If we are to "measure" it then we should take a long hard look at what He accomplished there. While we do this it is good that we do not confuse the picture with the reality.

God did NOT send His Son to die in a human body for six hours on a cross outside of Jerusalem. That is not an infinite sacrifice. Death by crucifixion for the Son of man serves to show the increasing pain that comes upon the Son of God as He absorbs more and more confessed sins. (We should thank our Father every day that He can handle it). The six hours on the cross illustrate the 6,000 years His people have been using Him as their Saviour. Romans 1:4.

Neither did He send Him to lie in a grave for three days - that is not an infinity either!

Not even the 6,000 years during which sin has been transferred to Him can be called a "long" time in the life of an eternal One.

It was not His humanity which paid the price of sin - it was His divinity.

Divinity cannot die as we know death, but our death, which is a separation from life and loved ones, gives us some faint idea of what is happening to Him. We "sleep" in death, but He is horribly awake through all of it. He was first physically separated from His Father when He took our humanity upon Himself in Bethlehem. (He and angels have appeared in Old Testament times looking and behaving like humans, but these were temporary occasions.) When He was born of Mary, Jesus took our human nature permanently and this made an everlasting physical breach between Father and Son. The reality of this, the spiritual separation, began in the garden of Eden when Adam and Eve gave Him their sinful natures, and has grown wider ever since as other Christians have done the same, but this was not evident to the people of the universe. Not until He was born a man did they begin to realize this.

The separation is like an aged man and woman whose spouses have died and who come to live in an old folks' home. They fall in love and then decide they would like to marry each other. But their children from their former marriages object and they are forced to live in the same house while being denied the intimacies that marriage would give them. They love but cannot be together. So, Jesus and His Father live in the same "house" but are separated by the actions of their "children". God the Father and His Son Jesus think that the perpetual agony is worthwhile if their children can be happy!

Jeremiah 15:18 The prophet who was close to Jesus cried

Why is My pain perpetual, and My wound incurable, which refuses to be healed?

Apart from saving us, by doing so He raised humanity up to God and we are therefore now in a position closer to the Father than if Adam had not sinned. Before, Adam was made a little lower than the angels - now by being in Christ, the saints are to be higher than they.

Hebrews 2:5-11 Jesus is now the Head of the human family

For to the angels has He not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak. But one in a certain place testified, saying,

What is man, that You are mindful of him? Or the son of man [Adam], that You visited him? You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honour, and did set him over the works of Your hands: You have put all things in subjection under his feet. [Psalm 8:4-6].

For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him [because Adam gave it away]. But we see Jesus, who [also] was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that He by the grace of God should taste death [the wages of sin] for every man.

For it became Him [or, it was right for God the Father], for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the Captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both He that sanctifies and they who are sanctified are all of one [humanity]: for which cause He [Jesus] is not ashamed to call them brethren…

See Jesus - Prophet, Priest and King for great detail on this

Apart from the initial separation He is being continually separated even more from His Father as He continues to take the burden of sin and this will not cease until the last Christian "sinner" forsakes his or her last sin and the "daily" transfer stops. (Those who do not come to the sanctuary for cleansing remain sinners by their own choice.) Then, and only then, can begin the event pictured by the Day of Atonement ceremony. This involves passing the guilt and result of the confessed sins back on to their instigator, the devil, which is pictured by the scapegoat transaction in Leviticus 16.

See "In the Holy of Holies" for more on this.

And "The Wedding Garment"

By this ritual we should be able to see that Jesus, our High priest, is waiting for us to make up our minds - do we love sin more than Him? When all are "sealed" with the seal of the living God, or "marked" with the mark of the beast, then He can move on to the next portion of His sacrifice.

Even when sin and sinners are no more, the lessons from the altar of self-sacrifice will still be going on, and the penalty of sin being borne by Jesus and His Father.

2 Corinthians 5:17-21 Our work is to tell the old, old story

Therefore if any man [or woman] be in Christ, he [or she] is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God [the Father], who has reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and has given to us the ministry of reconciliation; to wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them; and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

Now, then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be you reconciled to God. For He has made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

He carries the marks of the rebellion for ever. John 20:27-28.

Back to The Revelation Chapter Eleven

4. This statement does not mean that we can investigate and condemn those in the church whom we think are erring. Remember the story of the wheat and the tares? As with the other two thoughts we have just looked at, we are here being invited to measure the creatures who worship in the heavenly tabernacle, the angels and other beings from around the universe who make up God’s family. God says of them that they have never sinned and that is the situation which will exist in the new world. The Bible has many words to say about heavenly creatures and we should "measure" its statements rather than accept the modern version of little green creatures who are "aliens from outer space".

The first mention of angels in the Bible is when we are told that two of them accompanied Jesus on His visit to Abraham and then went on to meet with Lot in Sodom before it was destroyed. Genesis 19:1. They looked like men at first but their behaviour and their words later showed their origin.

They are not humans who have progressed to be angels. They are creatures in their own right and they come to this earth as helpers and watchers to see their Father’s character unfolding in a way they have never imagined before. As we get to know of them we will be able to see the new version of the world as a reality.

Psalm 24:1-6 Who shall stand in His holy place?

The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in His holy place? He that has clean hands, and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

This is [to be the attitude of] the generation of them that seek Him, that seek Your face, O Jacob [O God of Jacob, margin]. Selah. [Selah means stop and think prayerfully on what you have just read].

If the church on earth is to resemble a temple, let it be built according to the pattern shown in heaven, and not according to man’s genius. The invention of man often counteracts the working out of God’s plans. The golden measuring rod has not been placed in the hands of any finite man or any class of men, whatever their position or calling, but is in the hand of the heavenly Architect. If men will not meddle with God’s plan, and will let Him work upon the minds and characters, building them up according to His plan, a work will be accomplished that will stand through the severest of trials.

Of course, if you worship in the heavenly sanctuary, you can "examine yourself" to see whether you are in the faith. 2 Corinthians 13:5. This means to check whether you are only expecting to be forgiven (glossed over) for your sin when you confess it, or are you also expecting to be given the victory over each one so that you actually stop doing it. Do you think of Jesus under His first apartment ministry of forgiveness and cleansing, (1 John 1:9), or are you with Him in His second apartment ministry of finishing the work?

Matthew 5:48

[Jesus said] Be you therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Exodus 20:20

And Moses said to the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that His fear may be before your faces, that you sin not.

Psalm 4:3-5

But know that the LORD has set apart him that is godly for Himself: the LORD will hear when I call to Him. Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.

1 Corinthians 15:34

Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

1 John 1:9-10; 2:1-5

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

My little children, these things write I to you, that you sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and He is the propitiation [sacrifice] for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

And hereby we do know that we know [or follow] Him, if we keep His commandments. He that says, I know Him, and keeps not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby [or, in this way] know we that we are in Him.

5. Hebrews 11:8-16 Christians are strangers in the world

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing where he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country [for his inheritance was to be the whole world, Romans 4:13], dwelling in tabernacles [tents] with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: for he looked for a city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from where they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly [one]: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for He has prepared for them a city… [John 14:1-3].

Hebrews 11:37-40

[While on earth] they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect [or resurrected].

Jesus said, "Let the dead bury the dead" (Matthew 8:22), because this world belongs to them. We are not to interfere in their ways or their behaviour except to show them by our example that there is a better way, in case they might prefer it.

Luke 12:13-14 We are not to be politicians

And one of the company said to Him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And He said to him, Man, who made Me a judge or a divider over you?

2 Corinthians 5:19-20 We should be ambassadors not citizens

To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them; and has committed to us the word [or message] of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be you reconciled to God.

6. 42 literal months = 3 1/2 years. If this statement is for a period before 1844 then it should be regarded as showing prophetic time, which means 1260 day/years. If it is placed after 1844, then it is a literal 42 months which means 3 literal years. If the former, then we are being told of the 1260 years of the "little horn’s" supremacy from 538 to 1798, the first "war". If the latter, then we are being told of the length of the second "war"! A period of 3 years of persecution such as never was!

Note that we have not been told when this period will start.

The text says, "the holy city shall they tread" and in the context we are studying this places the treading down after 1844 because the events of the last part of chapter ten, the blowing of the sixth trumpet (the second woe) began in 1798. The book of Daniel was unsealed and eaten, but disappointed its readers in 1844. Then came the commission to tell the world again. However, when the seventh angel blows his trumpet the world has become the Lord's and politics are at an end, so the events of chapter eleven take place before the blowing of the seventh trumpet.

7. John 5:39 The Old Testament was the Jewish Scripture

Search the Scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify [or witness] of Me.

John 10:25 His works are recorded in the New Testament

Jesus answered them, I told you, and you believed not: the works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me.

Back to The Revelation Chapter Eleven

8. The two witnesses, the Old and the New Testaments of the Bible, were pictured clothed in sackcloth as a symbol of the mourning by the Spirit during the 1260 day/years of the Dark Ages. Being handwritten they were very scarce and most of the few copies that were available in Europe were written in Latin which only scholars could read. Because of this He was not able to get much light through to the saints of God. That is why Jesus said to them, "I will put upon you none other burden". Revelation 2:24.

The Spirit is also telling us here that this experience will be repeated in the future, but for a period of 1260 literal days, which is 3 1/2 years. In an age when the Bible is everywhere, in all languages and in hundreds of translations, this appears hard to believe at first, but He is merely advising us that those who do not want to know the real truth will be in the majority. They want a religion that appears to be following God while in practice, they are ignoring Him. Regardless of the number of Bibles they will only accept an explanation that suits them, no matter how at odds with other parts of Scripture.

Let all who would understand the meaning of these things read the eleventh chapter of Revelation. Read every verse, and learn the things that are yet to take place in the cities.

Back to The Revelation Chapter Eleven

9. It is repeated that the Bible is still with us as the two witnesses, and then attention is called to the fact that two churches also exist at this time. These are the 7th church of Laodicea and the 8th church which is in heaven. Each dispensation in earth's history is overlapped by its succeeding one so that for a while the two exist side by side with different people being in each one.

Jesus knew this and therefore formally set up His new church (the first of the seven) about 30AD a few years before the end of the Jewish dispensation in 34AD.

Mark 3:13-15 The ordaining of the apostles

And He goes up into a mountain, and calls to Him whom He would [or, chose]: and they came to Him. And He ordained twelve, that they should be with Him, and that He might send them forth to preach, and to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils…

The sealing of God's people into the 8th church is a progressive work but the dispensation in which this can be done began in 1844. The end time of the Laodicean church has not been told to us for that depends on the speed in which the new dispensation can be implemented. It has been called "the close of probation" for the world, and requires that all living beings make up their mind for or against the way of God with such determination that they cannot be moved from it. This will necessitate an effort of witness on the part of the Christians such as has never been seen before! Jesus told us about it in Matthew.

Ephesians 1:9-10 The last dispensation

[The Father] having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He has purposed in Himself: that in the dispensation of the fulness of times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in Him...

This will bring a tribulation such as has never been seen before!

Matthew 24:21-22

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

Back to The Revelation Chapter Eleven

10. All these curses and powers are written in the Book. "If any man hurt them..." is repeating the principle that he who attacks the Bible is rejecting the protection of God and accepting the doubtful "protection" of Satan. He who lives by the sword...

Back to The Revelation Chapter Eleven

11. "When they shall have finished their testimony" we are told that "the beast" which has been in the wilderness of the "bottomless pit" since 1798 will arise and "kill" them. This means that the anti-christian "system" which has no persecuting ability today will regain that power through the nations of the world and use it to overcome the words of the saints at the end of the 2nd war. This time all the religions of the world (Christian, Islamic and Pagan etc.) will be attacking the saints of God. As a result they will cease from troubling the world with the truth by hiding in the hills. Matthew 24:15-18. Of course, the words of God cannot be "killed" but they can be totally rejected which is what is being spoken of here.

Amos 8:10-12 The famine

And I will turn your [religious] feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day. Behold, the days come, says the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:

And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

Note that the word of God is still there, it is the "hearing" that has the famine. The Spirit of God cannot get any truth into the ears of those who refuse to follow His advice. Like Esau, they will cry bitter tears for what is happening, run to and fro in the Scriptures, but have no explanation as to why God does not answer their prayers.

Hebrews 12:16-17 Esau's repentance

Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For you know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place [or way] of repentance, though he sought it carefully [but not prayerfully] with tears [because of the result but not the sin].

The tribulations, the plagues such as cancer and Aids, the troubles such as random shootings, the floods and earthquakes in the world, and the "ethnic cleansings" or slaughterings because of religious differences, will get worse and worse as Jesus described. Near the end it will seem the most natural thing in the world to kill the Sabbath-keepers. Every one, from the little old lady who lives down the street, the mother who lives next door, to the most bigoted of religionists will agree that it has to be, in order that they and their children can survive.

Luke 21:23-27 The protection offered through the saints will cease

But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! For there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem [the church of God] shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled [the end of the 2nd persecution].

And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Their priests and ministers will tell them (as they told king Ahab) that the reason for God not answering their prayers is that there is a little group who are refusing to obey the states’ religious laws and these are causing God’s displeasure, and that He is punishing them until they clear the earth of the offenders. The truth is, of course, just the opposite. It is the powers of God out of His control and being misused by humans which are doing the damage.

1 Kings 18:17-18 Following the gods of force

And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, Are you he that troubles Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but you, and your father's house, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and you have followed Baalim.

For the full story see "Elijah, Ahab and Jezebel"

A reason for the delay

In so deceptive a way did Satan work that the sentiments that he developed in the minds of his followers could not be dealt with until they had matured in the minds of those who received them. Not until he sent Jesus to the cross did the inhabitants of the universe see his hatred for Him. And not until the Ten Commandments are universally scorned will many professed Christians wake up to what is going on. The influence of mind on mind, so strong a power for good when it is sanctified, is equally as strong for evil in the hands of those opposed to God.

All this is the result of an organized rebellion which has been going on since Lucifer became Satan the adversary. It is not a haphazard result. God has warned and warned but now the day has come which He has dreaded. He must perform His "strange act" and remove all of his protection from those who do not want it.

Psalm 83:1-5 A rebellious confederacy

Keep not You silence, O God: hold not Your peace, and be not still, O God. For, lo, Your enemies make a tumult: and they that hate You have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, and consulted against Your hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against You.

Psalm 119:126-127 The time is signalled by the rejection of the Ten Commandments

It is time for You, LORD, to work: for they have made void Your law. Therefore I love Your commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.

Romans 3:31 Faith and law work together - love is shown by obedience

Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yes, we establish the law.

Isaiah 28:21-29 His strange act

For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim [2 Samuel 5:19-21, where He protected a king], He shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, [Joshua 10:8-11, where He cared for Gideon and his companions] that He may do his work, His strange work; and bring to pass His act, His strange act [of protecting only the good and allowing the rebellious to have their own way completely].

Now therefore be you not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption [or an end], even determined upon the whole earth. Give you ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.

Does the plowman plow all day to sow? Does he open and break the clods of his ground? When he has made plain the face thereof, does he not cast abroad the [seed of the] fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rye in their place? For his God does instruct him to discretion, and does teach him... [Every task has an ending and a new one takes it place].

This also comes forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.

The "city" or kingdom where Christ is crucified spiritually is called "great Babylon", for it includes all the nations and all the religions of the world.

Genesis 13:13; 19:4-5 "Sodom" = sexual wickedness

But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly... But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: and they called to Lot, and said to him, Where are the men which came in to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.

Exodus 5:1-2 "Egypt" = disregard of God

And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Let My people go, that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness. And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

Isaiah 30:8-11 "Jerusalem" = rebellion against God

Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever: that this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not to us right things, speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits: Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.

Back to The Revelation Chapter Eleven

12. Those 3 days will seem like an eternity to God’s people. However, the witnesses will not remain "dead" any more than their Lord did. But if we would comprehend something of what that experience will be like let us consider the time a whole nation rejected God publicly.

As we have seen, Jesus described both the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the world in Matthew chapters 24 and 25. So today, some prophecies often have two meanings - one which has been, and one which will be, and this is one of them.

Would we know what the result of making void the Law of God will be? What happens when the Bible is utterly rejected? The experiment has been tried. Terrible were the scenes enacted during the French Revolution in the three and a half years between 1793 and 1797 when atheism (the king of the south) became the controlling power. It has since become known as the "Reign of Terror".

See "The Bible and the French Revolution"

No error accepted by the professed Christian world strikes more boldly against the authority of Heaven, none is more directly opposed to the dictates of reason, none is more harmful in its results, than the modern doctrine, so rapidly gaining ground, that God's law is no longer binding upon men.

Every nation has its laws, which command respect and obedience; no government could exist without them; and can it be conceived that the Creator of the heavens and the earth has no law to govern the beings He has made? Suppose that prominent ministers were publicly to teach that the statutes which govern their land and protect the rights of its citizens were not obligatory - that they restricted the liberties of the people, and therefore ought not to be obeyed; how long would such men be tolerated in the pulpit?

But is it a graver offence to disregard the laws of states and nations than to trample upon those divine precepts which are the foundation of all government?

It would be far more consistent for nations to abolish their statutes, and permit the people to do as they please, than for the Ruler of the universe to annul His law, and leave the world without a standard to condemn the guilty or justify the obedient. When the standard of righteousness is set aside, the way is open for the prince of evil to establish his power in the earth.

Malachi 3:16-18 The book of life

Then they that feared [respected] the LORD spoke often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon His name. And they shall be Mine, says the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son that serves him. Then shall you return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serves God and him that serves Him not.

13. It was in 1793 that the decrees which abolished the Christian religion and set aside the Bible were passed by the French Assembly. Three and a half years later a resolution rescinding these decrees, thus granting toleration to the Scriptures, was adopted by the same body.

Shortly after these events, the British Bible Society was organized (1804); then followed the American Bible Society (1817), and these with their almost innumerable auxiliaries, are scattering the Bible everywhere.

14. Revelation 6:12

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood...

Revelation 16:18-19

And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

The sixth seal opens and closes with a great earthquake.

15. The seventh angel is joined by a great chorus proclaiming that the probationary time of the world has closed. "The kingdom has now become the Lord’s, but He SHALL reign for ever and ever," they say.

Therefore this scene is taking place in heaven after the second advent following the triumphal return there of Christ and His people. It informs us that one day the Son of God will return again to the earth to take possession of it. But before that the book with the seven seals must be opened for the host of the kingdom. They must now understand without any veil just what the controversy was all about.

But, like all the others, the seventh angel also has a trumpet which warns of war. He is telling us about the third and final confrontation in the great controversy, for there is yet one more time when Satan and his followers will attack God’s people. This time they will be ready for him and will overcome him instead of being overcome and yet it is called "a woe"!
