Notes for

Matthew

Chapter Twenty-four

1. Daniel 9:24 Their "time of the end" had arrived - it was the 70th week

Seventy weeks [of years] are determined upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

2. Micah 3:9-12 This destruction had long been prophesied

Hear this, I pray you, you heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity. They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? no evil can come upon us. Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest.

Jeremiah 26:17-18 Micah’s words were remembered

Then rose up certain of the elders of the land, and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying, Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus says the LORD of hosts; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

Hosea 13:9; 14:1 But He would rather it didn’t happen

O Israel, you have destroyed yourself; but in Me is your help........ O Israel, return to the LORD your God; for you have fallen by your iniquity.

Matthew 23:37-39 Jesus had just warned the Jews

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets, and stone them which are sent to you, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you would not [let Me]! Behold, your house is left to you desolate. For I say to you, You shall not see Me henceforth, till you shall say, Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord.

1 Kings 9:5-9 Obedience or disobedience brings its reward

Then I will establish the throne of your kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David your father, saying, There shall not fail you a man upon the throne of Israel. But if you shall at all turn from following Me, you or your children, and will not keep My commandments and My statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them: then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for My name, will I cast out of My sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:

And at this house, which is high, every one that passes by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss [whistle in astonishment]; and they shall say, Why has the LORD done thus to this land, and to this house? And they shall answer, Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore has the LORD brought upon them all this evil.

Luke 19:41-44 The die was cast on Palm Sunday just before the crucifixion!

And when He was come near, He beheld the city, and wept over it, Saying, If you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things which belong to your peace! But now they are hid from your eyes [for you have closed your probation]. For the days shall come upon you, that your enemies shall cast a trench about you, and compass you round, and keep you in on every side, and shall lay you even with the ground, and your children within you; and they shall not leave in you one stone upon another; because you knew not the time of your visitation.

3. John 16:12-13 Not all is revealed at once

I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth...

The disciples thought that the end of the temple meant the end of the world, not just the end of their age. Jesus did not immediately tell them of the difference - in His answer He mingled the two events.

The Great Teacher held in His hand the entire map of truth, but He did not disclose it all to His disciples. He opened to them those subjects only which were essential for their advancement in the path to heaven. There were many things in regard to which His wisdom kept Him silent.

As Christ withheld many things from His first disciples, knowing that then it would be impossible for them to comprehend them, so to-day He withholds many things from us, knowing the capacity of our understanding. When we are tempted to climb above the simplicity of the truth, we need to study Christ's method of teaching. We need to learn to talk as simply as Christ talked, - so simply that the little child and the unlearned can understand us. It was the simplicity with which Christ presented the word that drew hearts to Him. Yet He spoke with assurance and power. Noblemen and some of the chief priests and rulers believed on His word.

4. Ephesians 5:6-11 All these words have two meanings - one for them in 70AD and one for us today.

Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things comes the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not you therefore partakers with them. For you were sometimes darkness [in the past], but now are you light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) proving what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

Colossians 2:8-10 Philosophy will take the place of true religion

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. And you are complete in Him, which is the head of all principality and power:

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 We should know the signs and the times

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I write to you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. You are all the children of light [or knowledge], and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober [serious]. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify [teach] one another, even as also you do.

John 5:43-44 The difference is easy to spot

I am come in My Father's name, and you receive Me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that comes from God only?

5. Acts 5:36-39 There were false christs before and at the birth of Christ

For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought. After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed. And now I say to you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: but if it be of God, you cannot overthrow it; lest haply you be found even to fight against God.

Jeremiah 14:13-16 False prophets tell us of peace

Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say to them, You shall not see the sword, neither shall you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place. Then the LORD said to me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spoke to them: they prophesy to you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in My name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; by sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.

Jeremiah 23:16-22 False prophets use the Bible only to back up their statements

Thus says the LORD of hosts, Hearken not to the words of the prophets that prophesy to you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. They say still to them that despise me, The LORD has said, You shall have peace; and they say to every one that walks after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.

For who has stood in the counsel of the LORD, and has perceived and heard His word? Who has marked His word, and heard it?

Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. The anger of the LORD shall not return, until He have executed, and till He have performed the thoughts of His heart: in the latter days you shall consider it perfectly.

I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused My people to hear My words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.

6. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-5 There is one great sign which should not be missed

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. Remember you not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

James 5:7-8 Everything comes in an order established by God

Be patient therefore, brethren, to the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman [gardener] waits for the precious fruit of the earth, and has long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be you also patient; establish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draws nigh.

Back to Matthew Twenty-four

7. "Pray you that your flight be not in the winter; neither on the Sabbath day," Christ said.

He who made the Sabbath did not abolish it, nailing it to His cross. The Sabbath was not rendered null and void by His death. Forty years after His crucifixion it was still to be held sacred. For forty years the disciples were to pray that their flight might not be on the Sabbath day.

What were they to pray for? That their eyes might be open to recognise that which they had been told about so clearly!!! For although the words of the Bible are clear and simple, we often have a false pre-conception of what they mean, and this hinders us from seeing the reality of the prophecy. Only those who are awake when this abomination is set up will know the time for their flight. In the original fulfillment it was the Roman armies surrounding the city of Jerusalem that was the signal. Luke 21:20.

In our time it will be state laws enforcing a certain religious idea all over the world.

Note that when the armies were already surrounding the city, then of course, the Christians could not get out! They still had to wait, but now they knew their situation, and watched carefully. The Romans lifted the siege for a short period and every Christian escaped. So, in our day, the laws will be passed one by one, and each group of Christians will need to listen carefully for the Spirit to tell them when their work is finished and it is time to leave the world to its fate.

This is a plea not to leave it till the last minute. Ask the Spirit for His plans for you before the time.

8. John 16:1-4 Church people are often God’s worst enemies

These things have I spoken to you, that you should not be offended [or upset]. They shall put you out of the synagogues [churches]: yes, the time comes, that whosoever kills you will think that he does God service. And these things will they do to you, because they have not known the Father, nor Me. But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, you may remember that I told you of them.

Micah 7:5-7 Religious views often separate families

Trust you not in a friend, put you not confidence in a guide [or minister]: keep the doors of your mouth from her that lies in your bosom [shares your bed]. For the son dishonours the father, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house.

Therefore I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.

Isaiah 66:5 Fear not to be cut off from the earthly church

Hear the word of the LORD, you that tremble at His word; your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for My name's sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but He shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

Remember Daniel 3:8-11?

The great divide is over the nature Christ took when He became human

1 John 4:1-3 Check carefully, for this will be a major argument

Beloved, believe not every spirit [or church teaching], but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Hereby know you the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses [or teaches] that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: and every spirit that confesses not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof you have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

What does this last thought mean? Surely every professed Christian church teaches that Jesus Christ was born of Mary and was really human? No!! All do not teach that.

Some teach that Jesus was born of a sinless Mary who was made that way by special decree of God. This teaching is called the "immaculate conception" OF MARY, the mother of God. This cuts Jesus off from really being like one of His brethren, the Christians, for it makes Him born of the sinless flesh of MARY. Yet we are told,

Romans 8:3

For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh...

Others teach that Jesus came like Adam as he was in the garden of Eden BEFORE the fall. This makes Him capable of keeping the commandments of God in His own strength while on earth as the Son of man, because Adam was so able. This cuts Him off from being one of us who have been born since the leaving of Eden, and who are not able to keep the Commandments in our own strength. It stops Him from being our example. Jesus denied that thought:

John 5:30

I can of My own self do nothing [while in humanity]: as I hear, I judge: and My judgment is just; because I seek not My own will, but the will of the Father which has sent Me.

A third teaching is that Jesus was the first created being who then created all other things in the universe. This makes Him exactly like all the other creatures in the world, with no power or position of His own, and reduces Him to the position of a mere puppet.

The truth is that He is the Son of God "with power" in Himself, and this He showed "by the resurrection from the dead".

Romans 1:3-5

... concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh [a long time after the fall]; and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: by whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for His name...

It was in His own strength that He came forth from the grave (Satan’s prison house) for He was no longer being an example to Christians. He ceased to be that on the Thursday night before the crucifixion when He became the sacrifice for the sins of the world. He had said during His ministry, "For as the Father has life in Himself; so has He given to the Son to have life in Himself", and He used that power ONLY during and after His resurrection. John 5:26.

In the beginning He came forth from the Father in a manner which is reflected, but not copied by, our birth process, and therefore He is called "the Son". See John 1:18 and Hebrews 1:5. God the Father has advised us that we can safely worship Him as God the Son.

Hebrews 1:5-6

For to which of the angels said He at any time, You are My Son, this day have I begotten You?

And again, I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son?

And again, when He brings in the firstbegotten into the world, He said, And let all the angels of God worship Him.

9. Acts 20:29-31 Only the truth can separate error from us

For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them [this is a good sign of falsehood]. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

The Saviour through the apostle Paul here tells us that in the last days false prophets from inside the church as well as outside of it will appear and draw away disciples after them. Here we can see that one main characteristic of error is the desire to set up another church or offshoot, to leave God's family.

Jesus also said that those who in this time of peril would stand faithful to the truth that is specified in the books of Daniel and The Revelation, would have to meet doctrinal errors so specious (illogical yet captivating), that, if it were possible, the very elect would be deceived.

Back to Matthew Twenty-four

10. 2 Thessalonians 2:8-12 There will be a powerful deception first

And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth [the spoken truth], and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming [the physical truth]: even Him, whose coming is AFTER the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

And for this cause God shall send them [or allow them to see] a strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

But just as we don’t need to see the actual "death" of a creature to know that it is there, because circling vultures give evidence of it, so we do not have to wait for the actual second advent. We may know by the fulfilling of the signs that it has begun, that Christ has left heaven.

As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will personate Christ. The church has long professed to look to the Saviour's advent as the consummation of her hopes. Now the great deceiver will make it appear that Christ has come. In different parts of the earth, Satan will manifest himself among men as a majestic being of dazzling brightness, resembling the description of the Son of God given by John in the Revelation. (Revelation 1:13-15).

The glory that will surround him will be unsurpassed by anything that mortal eyes have ever beheld. The shout of triumph will ring out upon the air: "Christ has come! Christ has come!" The people will prostrate themselves in adoration before him, while he lifts up his hands and pronounces a blessing upon them, as Christ blessed His disciples when He was upon the earth.

His voice will be soft and subdued, yet full of melody. In gentle, compassionate tones he will present some of the same gracious, heavenly truths which the Saviour uttered; he will heal the diseases of the people, and then, in his assumed character of Christ, he will claim to have changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and will command all to hallow the day which he has blessed. He declares that those who persist in keeping holy the seventh day are blaspheming his name by refusing to listen to his angels sent to them with light and truth.

This is the strong, almost overmastering delusion.

Like the Samaritans who were deceived by Simon Magus, the multitudes, from the least to the greatest, will give heed to these sorceries, saying: This is "the great power of God", because they have consistently refused to listen to the voice of the Spirit. See Acts 8:10.

[Return to Notes for The Revelation chapter 14]

But the people of God will not be misled. The teachings of this false christ are not in accordance with the Scriptures. His blessing is pronounced upon the worshipers of the beast and his image, the very class upon whom the Bible declares that God's unmingled wrath shall be poured out.

And, furthermore, Satan is not permitted to counterfeit the manner of Christ's advent. The Saviour has warned His people against deception upon this point, and has clearly foretold the manner of His second coming.

"There shall arise false christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. . . . Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, He is in the desert; go not forth; behold, He is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."

Revelation 1:7 The truth of the advent

Behold, He comes with clouds; and every eye shall see Him [for themselves], and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of Him. Even so, Amen.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 He will not touch the earth

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first [a worldwide resurrection]: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

This coming there is no possibility of counterfeiting. It will be universally known - heard and witnessed by the whole world.

But only those who have been diligent students of the Scriptures and who have received the love of the truth will be shielded from the powerful delusion that takes the world captive before this. By the Bible testimony these will detect the deceiver in his disguise.

To all the testing time will come.

By the sifting of temptation the genuine Christian will be revealed. Are the people of God now so firmly established upon His word that they would not yield to the evidence of their senses? Would they, in such a crisis, cling to the Bible and the Bible only? Satan will, if possible, prevent them from obtaining a preparation to stand in that day. He will so arrange affairs as to hedge up their way, entangle them with earthly treasures, cause them to carry a heavy, wearisome burden, that their hearts may be overcharged with the cares of this life and the day of trial may come upon them as a thief, suddenly and with no defence.

11. Isaiah 13:9-11 There will be great physical signs

Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and He shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

Joel 2:28-32 Spiritual awareness mingled with physical signs

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My spirit.

And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD has said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

Acts 2:16-21 It has already happened once soon after the crucifixion

[Peter said] But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: and on My servants and on My handmaidens I will pour out in those days of My Spirit; and they shall prophesy.

And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: and it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Luke 23:44-45 There were signs at the crucifixion too

And it was about the sixth hour [midday], and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour [3pm]. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

Matthew 27:50-51 God’s protection faltered as Jesus died

Jesus, when He had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent...

Back to Notes The Revelation Six

12. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Death is a sleep (in Jesus)

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep [in death], that you sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with [or in] Him [in His mind]. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain to the coming of the Lord shall not prevent [precede] them which are asleep.

For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first [from their graves]: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

1 Corinthians 15:12-26 The resurrection is the core of Christianity

Now if Christ be preached that He rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: and if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ: whom He raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: and if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; you are yet in your sins.

Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ [the Christians] are perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable [for the new world is where we look for happiness, Hebrews 11:9-10,16].

But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

But every man in his own order:- Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at His coming.

Then comes the end, when He shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when He shall have put down all [earthly] rule and all authority and power. For He must reign, till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

1 Corinthians 15:51-58 Some will not die

Behold, I show you a mystery [an unexplored truth]; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump. For the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we [the living Christians] shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be you steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as you know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Job 19:25-27 Job understood about the resurrection

For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: and though after my skin [is buried] worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins [or thoughts] be consumed within me [till that time].

Acts 2:34-35 In general, Christians have not yet gone to heaven

[Peter said] For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he says himself, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit You on My right hand, until I make Your foes Your footstool...

Back to Matthew Twenty-four

13. Luke 13:6-9 Another parable of a fig tree

He spoke also this parable;

A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he to the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbers it the ground? And he answering said to him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung [manure] it: and if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that you shall cut it down.

Jesus tells us that there is coming a time when the "planting of the LORD" shall no longer be of use to Him. These words were spoken of His work upon the earth, the three years He had spent working with the Jews, and the result was shown by the destruction of Jerusalem and their dispersion in the year 70AD. The parable has an application to the last days as well.

14. "all these things" must be fulfilled to one generation - in 70AD and again in the last day.

Back to Matthew Twenty-four

15. Mark 13:32 This verse appears to say that Jesus does not know!

But of that day and that hour knows no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

For Jesus, the Son of God, One who is equal with His Father, to say that He does not know the day and hour of His return to earth is not sensible. What He is telling us is that ONLY His Father will announce the time. Note that if it is the DAY and the hour, then it must of necessity be before the actual day. e.g. "Tomorrow, at 3pm." Therefore, those who listen to God will know at least a short time beforehand of the time of the event, but they will all learn this directly from God the Father, and no other source.

1 Corinthians 2:1-2 Consider the principle used here

And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know [or make known] any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.

Hebrews 12:25-27 The Father will speak again

See that you refuse not Him that speaks. For if they escaped not who refused Him that spoke on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from Him that speaks from heaven: whose voice then shook the earth: but now He has promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

And this word, Yet once more [or, only once more], signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

16. Genesis 6:5-8 God cannot protect where He is not allowed

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually [He thought his own thoughts].

And it repented the LORD that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repents Me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD [and built the ark as commanded].

This tells us that God was not willing that any should perish. John 3:16. But He had set up the system whereby the earth could be destroyed by a flood and therefore He blames Himself for the happening.

Genesis 7:5-7 Obedience IS the protection

And Noah did according to all that the LORD commanded him. And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth. And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

The ark was protection for the obedient. The disobedient saw the way out but would not believe or accept it, therefore they perished.

17. Mark 14:72 Weeping to repentance

And the second time the cock crowed. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said to him, Before the cock crow twice, you shall deny me thrice [three times]. And when he thought thereon, he wept [bitterly, Luke 22:62, and this brought him to confession and forgiveness].

Matthew 27:3-5 Weeping to suicide

Then Judas, which had betrayed Him, when he saw that He was condemned, repented himself [changed his mind], and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? See you to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

"taken" = protected

The righteous and the wicked are associated together in the work of life. But the Lord reads the character, He discerns who are obedient children, who respect and love His commandments. Then they pass sentence on themselves, one to life everlasting, the other to a death from which there can be no resurrection.

Romans 2:6-11

[God] ... will render to every man according to his deeds: to them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life.

But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath.

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that does evil, of the Jew [or church person] first, and also of the Gentile [those outside the church]; but glory, honour, and peace, to every man that works good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: for there is no respect of persons with God.

18. "you know not what hour". But you should! We should know the details of BOTH comings.

John 16:1-4

These things have I spoken to you, that you should not be offended [or upset]. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yes, the time comes, that whosoever kills you will think that he does God service. And these things will they do to you, because they have not known the Father, nor Me. But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, you may remember that I told you of them.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-2 This is the coming to the temple

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I write to you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night [quietly].

Consider the detail given by Gabriel to Daniel in the eighth to the twelfth chapters of that book. The first "coming" (for the cleansing of the sanctuary) we must know by faith in His word. The second "coming" (for the resurrection of His saints) we will know by our senses, as will all the other people of the world.

Luke 12:35-37 This is the second coming

Let your loins be girded about [working], and your lights burning [studying the Bible]; and you yourselves like to men that wait for their Lord, when He will return from the wedding; that when He comes and knocks, they may open to Him immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when He comes shall find watching: verily I say to you, that He shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat [dinner], and will come forth and serve them.

19. Luke 12:39-44 This advice applies to us before death also

And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. Be you therefore ready also: for the Son of man comes at an hour when you think not.

Then Peter said to him, Lord, speak You this parable to us, or even to all?

And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his Lord shall make ruler over His household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his Lord when He comes shall find so doing. Of a truth I say to you, that He will make him ruler over all that He has.

20. Luke 12:45-48 The terrible effect of not being watchful

But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delays His coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens [others in the church], and to eat and drink, and to be drunken [those who have rejected the call]; the Lord of that servant will come in a day when he looks not for Him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

And that servant, which knew his Lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to His will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For to whomever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

The evil servant says in his heart, "My lord delays His coming." He does not say that Christ will not come. He does not scoff at the idea of His second coming. But in his heart and by his actions and words he declares that the Lord's coming is delayed. He banishes from the minds of others the conviction that the Lord is coming quickly. His influence leads men and women to presumptuous, careless delay. They are confirmed in their worldliness and stupor. Earthly passions, corrupt thoughts, take possession of the mind.

The evil servant eats and drinks with the drunken, unites with the world in pleasure seeking. He smites his fellow servants, accusing and condemning those who are faithful to their Master. He mingles with the world. Like grows with like in transgression. It is a fearful assimilation. With the world he is taken in the snare.
