Notes for

Daniel Chapter Ten

1. Ezra 1:1-4 The permission to return had already been given in the first year of Cyrus.

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and He has charged me to build Him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all His people? His God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (He is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.

And whoever remains in any place where he sojourns [or doesn't want to return to Jerusalem], let the men of his place help him [the one who is going] with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.

"the time appointed was long". The magnitude of the truth began to dawn on Daniel.

2. Matthew 5:4 "mourning" = going softly before the Lord, praying and listening carefully

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Ezra 4:3-5 Temple rebuilding had ceased in Jerusalem which is why Daniel was mourning

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua [aka Joshua], and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said to them [pretended friends], You have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us. Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building, and hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

1 Corinthians 10:31

Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Diet affects our minds as well as our bodies. The way we eat can help or hinder our minds in our endeavour to function closer to God's way. Remember Chapter 1:14-16, seventy years before this? Our race is in a deplorable condition, suffering from disease of every description caused by erroneous behavior in eating. Many have inherited disease and are great sufferers because of the wrong habits of their parents, and yet they pursue the same wrong course in regard to themselves and their children which was pursued toward them. They are ignorant in regard to themselves. They are sick and do not know that their way of life is causing them immense suffering. There are but few as yet who are aroused sufficiently to understand how much their habits of diet have to do with their health, their characters, their usefulness in this world, and their eternal destiny.

3. Daniel is about 86 years old by this time. "Hiddekel" = Tigris river

4. Exodus 28:15-21 The beryl was the first stone in the fourth row

And you shall make the breastplate of judgment with cunning [skilful] work; after the work of the ephod [the waistcoat] you shall make it; of gold, of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine twined linen, shall you make it.

Foursquare it shall be being doubled; a [hand]span shall be the length thereof, and a span shall be the breadth thereof.

And you shall set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones: the first row shall be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this shall be the first row. And the second row shall be an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond. And the third row a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst. And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their enclosings.

And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes.

Revelation 21:19-20 The beryl is believed to be a green coloured stone

And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.

5. Revelation 1:13-15 Jesus as John saw Him about 60 years after the crucifixion

And in the midst of the seven candlesticks [stood] one like to the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps [the chest] with a golden girdle. His head and His hairs [hair and beard] were white like wool, as white as snow; and His eyes were as a flame of fire; and His feet like to fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and His voice as the sound of many waters.

Jesus is blond with a suntan complexion, piercing eyes, and a musical voice!

6. Acts 9:1-9 Paul the apostle had the same experience

And Saul [who became the apostle Paul], yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, and desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: and he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why persecute you Me? and he said, Who are You, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom you persecute: it is hard for you to kick against the pricks.

And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what will You have me to do? And the Lord said to him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told you what you must do.

And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.

Acts 26:12-18 Paul later told this experience to the king

[Paul said] Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, at midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking to me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecute you Me? It is hard for you to kick against the pricks.

And I said, Who are You, Lord? And He said, I am Jesus whom you persecute. But rise, and stand upon your feet: for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of these things which you have seen, and of those things in the which I will appear to you. Delivering you from the people, and from the Gentiles, to whom now I send you, to open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in Me.

Isaiah 6:1-5 Isaiah had met Christ many years before - c 739BC

In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train [the length of His robe of light] filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims [a class of angels]: each one had six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he did fly.

And one cried to another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

7. 1 Samuel 13:13-14 God is always looking for men who have His character of love

And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly: you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you: for now would the LORD have established your kingdom upon Israel for ever. But now your kingdom shall not continue: the LORD has sought Him a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be captain over His people, because you have not kept that which the LORD commanded you.

Acts 13:22 Jesus found David

And when He had removed him [Saul committed suicide], He raised up to them David to be their king; to whom also He gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, which shall fulfil all My will.

1 Kings 14:8 This is God's record of David the king

... and yet you have not been as My servant David, who kept My commandments, and who followed Me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in My eyes....

"greatly beloved" = man after God’s own heart.

8. Daniel 10:20 There is a continual conflict going on in the background

Then said he, Know you why I come to you? And now will I return to fight [with words] with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Greece shall come.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 God's people use only the weapons of heaven

For though we walk in the flesh [as all men do], we do not war after the flesh [as other men do]: (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal [or of this world], but [ours are] mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) casting down imaginations [or the minds of men], and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ...

Hebrews 4:12 The most powerful weapon is truth

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Daniel wanted to know so he could help us and in this he showed the character of God our Helper. This is why he was able to be given these visions. Gabriel had been endeavouring to guide Cyrus and couldn't get away immediately. Christ came to help him and the two of them tried to persuade Cyrus to do the right thing. (Michael = He who is like God). By this we can see that often heavenly agencies have to contend with great hindrances before the purpose of God can be fulfilled. They do not use any form of force, only the gentle persuasion of love.

9. Habakkuk 2:2-4 There may be a tarrying time but hang on in there

And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry [or seem to lapse], wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry [long]. Behold, his soul which is lifted up [in pride] is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith [in those days].

"your people... latter days" = Christians of the last days.

"many days" = many years

10. Hebrews 10:24-25 Companionship helps to strengthen us

And let us consider one another to provoke [or encourage each other] to love and to good works: not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as you see the day approaching.

11. Acts 10:34-35 God works with all who will listen to Him

Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: but in every nation he that fears [or respects] Him, and works righteousness, is accepted with Him.

Cyrus died in 529BC, about 4 years after these words were spoken to Daniel. Alexander came along about 313BC.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 Christians fight, but not as worldlings do

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal [or of this earth], but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ...

The Christian way of fighting is to influence the minds of others.

12. Isaiah 41:22-24 God's challenge to false gods

Let them bring them forth, and show us what shall happen: let them show the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come. Show the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods: yes, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.

Behold, you are of nothing, and your work of nought: an abomination is he that chooses you.

Isaiah 42:9 Only the living God can accurately foretell the future

Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.

John 13:19 Jesus used this ability as a witness

Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am He.

"Scriptures of truth" - Gabriel was only going to show Daniel that which was already written in the Bible, the books of Moses and the prophets, which we call the Old Testament. He is a diligent student in Bible study, for, like us, angels have to read and figure out what God is doing, and why!

1 Peter 1:10-12 Prophets and angels also study like us

Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come to you. Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify [or mean], when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. To whom it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to us they did minister the things, which are now reported to you by them that have preached the gospel to you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
