Notes for

Daniel Chapter Two

1. Job 33:14-18 God has often sent messages to unbelievers.

For God speaks once, yes twice, yet man perceives it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction, that He may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. He keeps back his soul from the pit [of death], and his life from perishing by the sword.

Judges 7:13-14

And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream to his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came to a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along. And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand has God delivered Midian, and all the host.

Matthew 27:17-19

Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you that I release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?

For he knew that for envy they had delivered Him. When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have you nothing to do with that just Man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of Him.

2. Genesis 31:24 God interprets His dreams.

And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, Take heed that you speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

Genesis 40:8

And they said to him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said to them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.

Genesis 41:15-16

And Pharaoh said to Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of you, that you can understand a dream to interpret it. And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

Genesis 41:32

And for that the dream was doubled to Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

Syriac: = a language spoken all over the then known world. The Bible stops using the Hebrew language at this point in the story and continues in the Syriac language until Daniel chapter 7:28. This means that any literate persons in that time could read these prophecies for themselves.

Back to Chapter Two

3. This was so that they could make up an interpretation. They claimed to know everything through their god, so God suggested to Nebuchadnezzar that he test them.

4. Isaiah 41:22-24 God's challenge to His adversaries.

Let them bring them forth, and show us what shall happen: let them show the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come. Show the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods: yes, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together. Behold, you are of nothing, and your work of nought: an abomination is he that chooses you.

5. Matthew 19:26 Only the living God can answer.

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Isaiah 45:11-12

Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask Me of things to come concerning My sons, and concerning the work of My hands command you Me. I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even My hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

6. Psalm 69:22 Consider the effect faulty food can have on us!

Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.

7. Numbers 12:6 God will always answer a genuine prayer - one asked on behalf of others

And He said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make Myself known to him in a vision, and will speak to him in a dream.

1 John 3:22

And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

Matthew 18:19-20

Again I say to you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of My Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.

Matthew 5:43-45

You have heard that it has been said, You shall love your neighbour, and hate your enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

8. Exodus 34:6 Name often means "character" in the Bible.

And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, to the third and to the fourth generation.

Back to Chapter Two

9. See Luke 2:1-6 for a practical example of how God does this.

In the form of men, angels are often in the assemblies of the righteous; and they visit the assemblies of the wicked, as they went to Sodom, to make a record of their deeds, to determine whether they have passed the boundary of God's forbearance.

Genesis 19:1

And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground... [These angels had appeared to Abraham in human form and eaten a meal with him a little before this, Genesis 18:1-8].

The Lord delights in mercy; and for the sake of a few who really serve Him, He restrains calamities and prolongs the tranquillity of multitudes. Little do sinners against God realize that they are indebted for their own lives to the faithful few whom they delight to ridicule and oppress.

Though the rulers of this world know it not, yet often in their councils angels have been spokesmen. Human eyes have looked upon them; human ears have listened to their appeals; human lips have opposed their suggestions and ridiculed their counsels; human hands have met them with insult and abuse. In the council hall and the court of justice these heavenly messengers have shown an intimate acquaintance with human history; they have proved themselves better able to plead the cause of the oppressed than were their ablest and most eloquent defenders. They have defeated purposes and arrested evils that would have greatly retarded the work of God and would have caused great suffering to His people. In the hour of peril and distress...

Psalm 34:7

"The angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear Him, and delivers them."

Proverbs 14:34 Consider these principles on how God sets up and removes.

Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

Proverbs 16:12

It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established [and kept] by righteousness.

Proverbs 20:28

Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upheld by mercy.

James 1:5

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

Matthew 13:10-12

And the disciples came, and said to Him, Why speak You to them in parables? He answered and said to them, Because it is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever has not, from him shall be taken away even that he has.

John 8:12

Then spoke Jesus again to them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Back to Chapter Two

10. 1 John 5:14-15 But only according to His will.

And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to His will, He hears us: and if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him.

John 15:14-15

You are My friends, if you do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knows not what his lord do: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of My Father I have made known to you.

Back to Chapter Two

11. Luke 6:27-28 This is His will !

But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

12. "I have found...." Compare with Daniel's answer in the next paragraph, "I can't, but God can".

13. Amos 4:13 Only the living God can read our minds.

For, lo, He that forms the mountains, and creates the wind, and declares to man what is his thought, that makes the morning darkness, and treads upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is His name.

Psalm 115:1-9

Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name give glory, for Your mercy, and for Your truth's sake. Why should the heathen say, Where is now their God? But our God is in the heavens: He has done whatsoever He has pleased.

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: they have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: they have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.

They that make them are like to them; so is every one that trusts in them.

O Israel, trust you in the LORD: He is their help and their shield.

14. Genesis 41:15-16 All Christians give the glory to God.

And Pharaoh said to Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of you, that you can understand a dream to interpret it. And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

"their sakes" Consider this verse in Obadiah.

Obadiah 1:21

And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD'S.

Back to Chapter Two

15. "cut out without hands" = from the mountain which is in the background. See verse 45 lower down the page. The "mountain" is God's stronghold in the world, His living church, and His Spirit will use a part of it to finish the work.

Romans 9:28

For He will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.

Jeremiah 51:19-20

The portion [or God] of Jacob is not like them [the false gods]; for He is the former [Maker] of all things: and Israel is the rod of His inheritance: the LORD of hosts is His name. [He says] You are My battle axe and weapons of war: for with you will I break in pieces the nations, and with you will I destroy kingdoms...

16. Jeremiah 51:7-9 God would have liked to save Babylon but was prevented from doing so.

Babylon has been a golden cup in the LORD'S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad. Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm [medicine] for her pain, if so be she may be healed.

We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reaches to heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.

Isaiah 13:12 Gold is a symbol of a good man - Nebuchadnezzar is a good man gone bad

I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.

20. The second leg of iron symbolizes the religion and the time of world domination by the Roman bishops (popes, or fathers) from 538AD -- 1798 AD. Their dominon extended all over the globe.

21. Jeremiah 18:6 "clay" represents a church system - "miry clay" = a dirty system.

O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? says the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.

Isaiah 64:8

But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our potter; and we all are the work of Your hand.

Psalm 40:1-3

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a Rock, and established my goings. And He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

Back to Chapter Two ......... Iron and clay = civil governments + national religions.

22. Church and State: Two opposing principles.

It is because their basic principles are in opposition that these two cannot harmonize. The state is concerned only with material things, such as taxes, health care, civil protection of its citizens and other external problems, and as such is "ordained of God".

Romans 13:1-4

Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whoever therefore resists the power, resists the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Will you then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and you shall have praise of the same: for he is the minister of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil [or wrong], be afraid; for he bears not the sword [of authority] in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil.

The false churches, on the other hand, want to control not only the wealth and bodies of their followers, but also their conscience or way of thinking.

For a good example of God's protection through the state see below:-

Jeremiah 40:1-6

The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, which were carried away captive to [go to] Babylon.

And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said to him, The LORD your God has pronounced this evil upon this place. Now the LORD has brought it, and done according as He has said: because you have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed His voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.

And now, behold, I loose you this day from the chains which were upon your hand. If it seem good to you to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well to you. But if it seem ill to you to come with me into Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before you: where it seems good and convenient for you to go, there go.

Now while he was not yet gone back [to Babylon], he [also] said, [You can] go also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go wherever it seems convenient to you to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals [food] and a reward [money], and let him go. Then went Jeremiah to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

23. John 18:36 God's people do not fight with earthly weapons.

Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if My kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight [in the way of the world], that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is My kingdom not from here.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after [or like the people of ] the flesh: (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal [or earthly], but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds [of pride]); casting down imaginations [or wrong thinking, by lifting up the truth], and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ...

Isaiah 11:9-12

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

And in that day there shall be a root [or descendant] of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign [or Standard] of the people; to it [or Him] shall the Gentiles seek: and His rest shall be glorious.

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. And He shall set up an ensign [or Standard] for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

Consider these verses Matthew 1:5-16

And Salmon begat [or was the father of] Boaz of Rachab; and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; and Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Uriah.......... And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

24. Ezekiel 20:33-44 The end of the age.

As I live, says the Lord GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you: and I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein you are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out.

And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face. Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, says the Lord GOD, and I will cause you to pass under the rod [a method of counting], and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.

And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against Me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and you shall know that I am the LORD.

As for you, O [rebellious] house of Israel, thus says the Lord GOD; Go you, serve you every one his idols, and hereafter also, if you will not hearken to Me: but pollute you My holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols. For in My holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, says the Lord GOD, there shall all the [loyal] house of Israel, all of them in the land, serve Me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the firstfruits of your oblations, with all your holy things. I will accept you with your sweet savour, when I bring you out from the people, and gather you out of the countries wherein you have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you before the heathen.

And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for the which I lifted up My hand to give it to your fathers. And there shall you remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein you have been defiled; and you shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that you have committed. And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I have wrought with you for My name's sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O you house of Israel, says the Lord GOD.

John 14:1-3

Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in Me.

In My Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

Isaiah 43:18-21

Remember you not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

The beast of the field shall honour Me, the dragons [jackals NKJ] and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen. This people have I formed for Myself; they shall show forth My praise.

Isaiah 42:9-14

Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them. Sing to the LORD a new song, and His praise from the end of the earth, you that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.

Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar does inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains. Let them give glory to the LORD, and declare His praise in the islands.

The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, He shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: He shall cry, yes, roar; He shall prevail against His enemies [the last enemy is death, 1 Corinthians 15:26]. I have long time held My peace; I have been still, and refrained Myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once.

Isaiah 2:2-5

And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it. And many people shall go and say, Come you, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

And He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come you, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

Micah 4:1-10

But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow to it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in His paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

And He shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken it.

For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever. The final decision time.

In that day, says the LORD, will I assemble her that halts [limps], and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted; and I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever. And you, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, to you shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem. The true and faithful Christians (Christ-like people).

Now why do you cry out aloud? Is there no King in you? Is your Counsellor perished? For pangs have taken you as a woman in travail. Be in pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in travail [childbirth]: for now shall you go forth out of the city, and you shall dwell in the field, and you shall go even to Babylon; there shall you be delivered; there the LORD shall redeem you from the hand of your enemies.

Psalm 22:27-28

All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD: and all the kindreds [families] of the nations shall worship before You. For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and He is the governor among the nations.

Revelation 11:15

And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever.

25. Acts 10:25-26 Worship is due to God only, for He is the only One who can handle it.

And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

Revelation 19:9-10

And he [an angel] said to me, Write, Blessed are they which are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he said to me, These are the true sayings of God. And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said to me, See you do it not: I am your fellowservant, and of your brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

26. Isaiah 43:8-13 God has many witnesses - some in, and some out of, the church.

Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.

Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and show us former things? Let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.

You are My witnesses, says the LORD, and My servant[s] whom I have chosen: that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He: before Me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after Me.

I, even I, am the LORD; and beside Me there is no Saviour. I have declared, and have saved, and I have showed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore you are My witnesses, says the LORD, that I am God. Yes, before the day was I am He; and there is none that can deliver out of My hand: I will work, and who shall let [prevent] it?

27. Deuteronomy 28:13 "in the gate" = Daniel had an important position as adviser to the people and sat in the entrance to the city to be readily available to them..
