The birth of Jesus

A Roman soldier

How earthly rulers fulfill God's plans

Luke 2:1-6

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should [be enrolled in order] be taxed.

(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

Augustus, like many other political persons before and since then, thought that he had come up with this idea himself. But, as we will see as we continue in Daniel, there are agents from heaven working in this world and making suggestions on how it should be run. Just as they operate in the church, so God's angels work with rulers and politicians in an effort to keep the nations of the world from being destroyed. They are not very often successful, but they do not give up on account of that.

When Peter was held in prison to be offered the next day as a sacrifice for his faith, angels of heaven came and opened the strongly barred gates, wakened Peter, and led him forth to be a witness for the Master. Acts 12:7.
