The creation of Eve
Let’s be clear about one thing right from the start – Eve was NOT created – she was SEPARATED.
WHY this is important will become understandable as we proceed, but first let me draw you a word picture through some texts in the Bible.
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth [our solar system] . . .
16He made the stars [the distant suns of other solar systems] also [at the same time].
[various] times and in divers [different] manners spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed Heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds [note the plural]".
"God, who at sundry
This is something we cannot fully comprehend in our finite state.
We just have to accept it because we exist.
What this truth tells us is that God Almighty is the Source of the entire universe, and as such we need to be thankful to Him for this blessing of life.
However, the Sovereign of the cosmos was not alone in His work of goodness. He had an associate – a co-worker who could appreciate His purposes, and could share His joy in giving happiness to created beings. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God". John 1:1-2. He is often called the LORD God.
"Thus says God the LORD, He that created the heavens, and stretched them out; He that spread forth the earth, and that which comes out of it; He that gives breath to the people upon it, and Spirit to them that walk therein: ‘I the LORD have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you[as your Saviour], and give you for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; to open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house [as you spread the gospel news].
I am the LORD: that is My name: and My glory will I not give to another, neither My praise to graven images’." Isaiah 42:5-8.
(See also Ephesians 2:10; 3:9; Colossians 1:15-20.)
Why did They create the cosmos?
It is written in the last book of the Bible, "You are worthy, O LORD, to receive glory and honour and power: for You have created all things, and for Your pleasure they are and were created". Revelation 4:11. They like people!
The law of love being the foundation of the government of God, the happiness of all the intelligent beings He made to inhabit the worlds depends upon their perfect accord with its great principles of righteousness. God desires from all His creatures the service of love – service that springs from an appreciation of His character. However, He takes no pleasure in a forced obedience, and to all He grants freedom of will, that they may render Him voluntary service.
That other creatures exist is made plain in the Scriptures. Angels (who live on a planet we humans call "heaven") are often mentioned as being here on earth bringing messages and help to us. (e.g. see Genesis 19:1 and Revelation 7:11.) There are other created beings who live on other planets in other solar systems, but they are not frequently mentioned or so clearly identified, for they do not play an active part in the plan of redemption. See Revelation 12:10-12 for an example of their presence.
In a reference to the place of Christians in God’s creation, we are told, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of His own will begat He us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures". James 1:17-18. Why? Because one day there came a change in that heavenly atmosphere of love. Lucifer, the foremost angel, noted that while his companion, Michael, could go freely into the presence of the bright light which enshrouded the Father, and receive messages and commands which He passed on to the universe through Lucifer and his fellow angels, Lucifer himself felt a resistance when he tried to enter that glory. He then began to accuse God of refusing him.
So he objected, and raised the issue of favouritism.
His normal position was near the presence of the great God, and the ceaseless beams of glory enshrouding the eternal God actually rested upon him. "Thus says the LORD God; You seal up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty . . . You are[one of] the anointed cherub[s] that covers [see endnote 1]; and I have set you so: you were upon the holy mountain of God; you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire [the edges of the "powerhouse" around God]. You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, till iniquity [a source of sin] was found in you". Ezekiel 28:12-15.
Patiently and lovingly, Almighty God assured him that there was no such thing as favouritism in His mind, but that Michael was different and had an ability which a creature could not have – in other words, He proclaimed that Michael (the name means "He who is like God") was not created, but was His "only begotten[unique]" Son. "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth". John 1:14.
He had just looked and behaved as a created angel until that time.
"And there was war[of words] in heaven: Michael [He who is like God] and His angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not [they rejected God’s explanation and pleas to remain and study it out]; neither was their place found any more in heaven [for they left, Jude 1:6]. And the great dragon [as he was pictured from then on] was cast out [in the minds of the loyal angels], that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceives the whole world: he was cast out [he actually left in a rebellious huff, the original off-shoot] into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him [it was their choice]". Revelation 12:7-9. We are told that he persuaded one third of the community of heaven to follow him! Verse 4. That’s a lot!
So now God had a problem.
Lucifer had confused ALL the angels (although two thirds had believed God and were now living by faith in His word), and He needed to PROVE that word to them. He knew that what Lucifer had done would eventually destroy him and his followers, for "the wages[result] of sin is death [the absence of life]". Romans 6:23. This is not an act of arbitrary power on the part of God. The rejecters of His mercy reap that which they have sown. God is the fountain of life; and when one chooses the service of sin, he or she separates from God, and thus cuts himself/herself off from life. He is "alienated from the life of God". Ephesians 4:18. Christ says, "All they that hate Me love death". Proverbs 8:36.
This is sadly evidenced in the predicted behaviour at the second coming of those humans who have rejected Him. "And the heaven[atmosphere] departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; and said to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb(!) for the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?’" Revelation 6:14-17.
God gives all humans existence for a time that they may develop their character and reveal their principles. This accomplished, they receive the results of their own choice. By a life of rebellion, Satan and all who unite with him have placed themselves so out of harmony with God that His very presence is to them "a consuming fire". Hebrews 12:29.
The glory of Him who is love will destroy them.
Lucifer, as the anointed cherub, had been highly exalted; he was greatly loved by the heavenly beings, and his influence over them was strong. God's government included not only the inhabitants of heaven, but of all the worlds that He had created; and Satan thought that if he could take the angels of heaven with him in rebellion, he could carry also the other worlds. He had artfully presented his side of the question, employing sophistry and fraud to secure his objects. His power to deceive was very great, and by disguising himself in a cloak of falsehood he had gained an advantage. (Jesus told us, he is the "father[originator] of lies". John 8:44.) But at that time the loyal angels could not fully discern his new character, or see where his work was leading, so they waited on God (for about 1,650 years).
Because He enjoys setting puzzles (called "mysteries" in the Bible), God has made all His creatures with an insatiable curiosity, and therefore we love to work them out. So now He began to lay down a big one!
He and Michael, the host of loyal angels, and the leaders of the other inhabited worlds, came to this part of Their universe and began that which many Christians have loosely called "the creation" of the earth. We can be sure that Satan and his angels followed too and watched intently what was going on, for they had a premonition that this action would mean much to them.
This is what we are told of that time:
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
The planet was only apparently "without[solid] form", because it was covered with restless water although it was solid underneath, and it was "void of life" because it was uninhabited. But it had existed since the first moment of creation, like so many others in the universe.
At this point in the gospel story we are introduced to another companion of God’s – the Holy Ghost – who as His name implies is mostly invisible, although His work on earth can be clearly seen. Jesus told us regarding His actions, "The wind blows where it lists[pleases], and you hear the sound thereof, but can not tell whence it comes, and where it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit". John 3:8. And one of His purposes? "That we [apostles] should be to the praise of His [the Father’s] glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom you also trusted, after that you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that you believed, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise". Ephesians 1:12-13. (See endnote 2 for more on the Spirit.)
Wonderfully were these words fulfilled. After the descent of the Holy Spirit, the disciples were so filled with love for Him and for those for whom He died, that hearts were melted by the words they spoke and the prayers they offered. They spoke in the power of the Spirit; and under the influence of that power thousands were converted – three thousand in one day. See Acts 2:41.
As we continue the story, we are told that the action of reshaping the world and filling it with creatures began.
And God said, "Let there be light": and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light "Day", and the darkness He called "Night".
And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Who spoke and where did the light come from?
We have already read that it was the Son who made the worlds, and that He is called the Word of God, so it was He who spoke, and the light came from within Him. Its effect was to create two distinct zones.
Almighty God is so much greater than His creatures that He cannot be seen or approached closely by them. So He has an Intermediary who does this for Him. The "go-between" can be seen and approached, for His glory can be veiled as it was when He appeared as an angel amongst them.
Paul wrote; "To me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles[the non-Jews] the unsearchable riches of Christ [His power and position]; and to make all men see what is the fellowship [depths] of the mystery [an undiscovered puzzle], which from the beginning of the world has been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ. To the intent that now to the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church [the Christians] the manifold wisdom of God, according to the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our LORD". Ephesians 3:8-11.
The church is God's fortress, His city of refuge, which He holds in a world of rebellion. From the beginning, faithful souls have constituted the church on earth. In every age the LORD has had His watchmen and women, who have borne a faithful testimony to the generation in which they lived. These sentinels gave the message of warning; and when they laid off their armour and died, others took up the work. The Son of God brought these witnesses into covenant relationship with Himself, uniting the church on earth with the church in heaven. He has sent forth His angels to minister to His church, and "the gates of hell" have not been able to prevail against His people. Matthew 16:18.
All this was not yet known to the inhabitants of the universe, so for that first period of twenty-four hours, Michael set the angels, both loyal and rebellious, a picture that they could really puzzle over – what did the light and darkness mean, and why couldn’t they mix? They knew that they could not produce such an effect and it began to dawn on all of them that this "angel", as they had always thought of Him, must be different.
He had power that they did not. Naturally, this made the rebels even angrier, and this reaction was noted by the loyal ones.
And [twenty-four hours later], God [the Word] said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters". 7 And God [the Son] made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8And God called the firmament "Heaven [i.e. the air, or sky, where clouds (water) floats]".
And the evening and the morning were the second day.
This time the angels were really intrigued. What did this mean?
Then it dawned on them – there was now a division in their ranks – some of them were loyal to their Commander and some were rebels – some of them still lived in their "heaven", while the others would soon be on the earth and its "heaven".
"Waters" had come to mean creatures in their minds. (See Revelation 17:15.)
And God said [after another twenty-four hour space for pondering], "Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear": and it was so.
10And God called the dry land "Earth"; and the gathering together of the waters called He "Seas" [great lakes, not oceans]: and God saw that it was good.
11And God said, "Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth": and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13And the evening and the morning were the third day.
So the angels said, "Now what?" as they saw a distinction made between the earth and the water. The "earth" could produce plants which in turn could reproduce themselves. Such a thing had not been known among the angels, for when they came on the scene their home had been complete and they didn’t reproduce. See Matthew 22:30. Now they began to realise that they were watching a repetition of their own creation (with some differences).
And they saw WHO had made them! With adoration the loyal angels must have fallen to their knees and praised Him for their lives, while the rebels smirked and muttered that they would not do that – they thought they were self-sufficient, not realising that "in Him we live, and move, and have our being". Acts 17:28.
And [now that enough time had elapsed for the lessons to sink in] God [the Son] said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth": and it was so.
16And God made two GREAT lights [not the planets, just the illumination]; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: (He [had] made the [other] stars [to shine in a similar way] also.) [Astronomers tell us that about 48% of observable stars are binaries, or couples.]
17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
This time the Creator turned His attention to two other planets in the earthly system (for worlds come in bunches we call solar systems) and made light to come from each of them. One was very bright and the other only one seventh of that, but both were alight. This meant that there would be alternate periods of bright and dim as the earth rotated in its orbit around the major one, and the lesser light circled the earth. (The sun and moon were "in sync" in those days.)
Later in the scriptures it is mentioned that the LORD God often visited Adam "in the cool of the day" as the changeover from day to night took place. Genesis 3:8. That situation does not exist today because of one of the results of sin, and our "night" is often full of darkness now, but that’s another story.
Thankfully, we are told that in the new world, when things are restored to their original Edenic beauty, "Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD binds up the breach of His people, and heals the stroke of their wound". Isaiah 30:26.
And in another place, "The sun shall be no more your light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light to you: but the LORD shall be to you an everlasting light, and your God your glory. Your sun shall no more go down[dim]; neither shall your moon withdraw itself [go out]: for the LORD shall be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning shall be ended. Your people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, that I may be glorified". Isaiah 60:19-21.
This thought is picked up in The Revelation. "And the city[New Jerusalem in the new world] had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb [a picture name for Michael] is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it". Revelation 21:23-24. The sun and moon will still be there in all their glory, but in the presence of the LORD GOD (the Son) their light will be overcome.
It was on the fourth day that the Son of God withdrew His personal light and allowed the earth and its plants to exist by the lights of the heavens – atmospheric and solar. He wanted His students to really think about the next two days of creation – so twenty-four hours on He spoke again.
And God said, "Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven".
21And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind [there were many species], and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth".
23And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
So there came into existence many forms of life in the lower waters on the earth, and creatures which could fly above both water and land, in the very waters of the heaven and the firmament. What a puzzle! But angels and other beings are intelligent creatures, being made in the image of God and at times called "the sons of God", so the bits were coming together in their minds, howbeit slowly.
A little note:
Regarding the people of the cosmos, we are told about one of the periodic conferences which are held at various places in the universe. "Now there was a day when the sons of God[the leaders of the other worlds] came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them [this meeting was not in heaven]. And the LORD said to Satan, ‘Whence come you?’ Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, ‘From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it’ [I’m its boss]". Job 1:6-7.
But that particular meeting was yet in the future from our story.
What the angels (both good and bad) saw in this latest act of Michael was that there would be interaction between the inhabitants of the earth and the rebel host. They began to see that their former friend Lucifer and his followers would be working amongst these new creatures. Just how, and what would be the result, they could not yet comprehend. They had to wait for the time of the Flood to see it!
Then, twenty-fours later, as per God’s schedule, came the crowning act of His creation.
And [the LORD] God said, "Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind": and it was so. 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creeps upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. [These ones stayed on the land.]
26And [then, after a long pause] God [the Father, Son and Spirit] said [together, to emphasise the importance of what They were going to do now], "Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth".
So God created man in His own image [physically, mentally and morally], in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them [in one body].
28And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue [guide] it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth".
29And God said [to the man], "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat [food]. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creeps upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat [food]": and it was so.
31And God saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.
And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Thus, late in the afternoon of the sixth day, the LORD God made a creature that looked very similar to the angels. It is written, "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul". Genesis 2:7.Like the angels, he was to be a vegetarian, eating only the produce of some of the other creations, not the plants themselves. The animals were to eat grass and the leaves of the plants.
In God’s kingdom no one takes the life of another creature or plant, but all live to serve others. Things are different on earth now, but again, that’s another story.
The LORD then gave Adam his first task, which was to name the new creatures according to their characters and place in the newly developed world. This had two purposes – one to show that he was no dullard, but was a fully functioning intelligent being, only a little lower than the angels themselves, for we are told, "But one in a certain place testified, saying, ‘What is man, that You are mindful of him? Or the son of man[Adam], that you visit him? You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honour, and did set him over the works of Your hands’." Hebrews 2:6-7.
As Adam accomplished his task, it dawned on him and the onlookers that each creature had a mate, for the representatives of each species came two by two to him for their naming. Thus the second purpose was fulfilled. Where was his mate? All this set the minds of the angels buzzing, for they did not have "mates", each of them being self-sufficient in this regard, as is God.
(Jesus told His disciples; "For in the resurrection they[the redeemed] neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven". Matthew 22:30. Yep, you guessed it, another story!)
Then came another action.
"And out of the ground the LORD God[had] formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and [now He] brought them to Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name [character] thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet [fit] for him". Genesis 2:19-20.
This is where we come back to our subject.
Where was she?
Inside Adam! For we are told:
"And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; and the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made He a woman, and brought her to the man. And Adam said, ‘This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called "Woman", because she was taken out of man’." Genesis 2:21-23. The "rib" signifies that she was close to his heart.
The Son of God Himself gave Adam a companion. He provided "a help meet for him" – a helper corresponding to him – one who was fitted to be his companion, and who could be one with him in love and sympathy. In the picture form Eve was built up from a rib taken from the side of Adam, signifying that she was not to control him as the head, nor to be trampled under his feet as an inferior, but to stand by his side as an equal, to be loved and protected by him. A part of man, bone of his bone, and flesh of his flesh, she was his second self; showing the close union and the affectionate attachment that should exist in this relationship. "For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it". Ephesians 5:29.
Adam also said, "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they shall be one", showing that the inbuilt condition was the best.
But let’s think about this. What we have read means that when Adam was created he was both male and female in one body. That’s how God is – that’s how the angels are – that’s how every person in the cosmos is. But now a change had come – a major change.
Another little note: Have you ever wondered how a male God knows how a female human feels? Now you know! He is both male and female in one body.
Let’s backtrack a little:
All the inhabitants of heaven and the other worlds had taken a deep and joyful interest in the setting up of the world and of the creation of man. The LORD had endowed Adam with powers of mind superior to any other living creature on earth that He had made. His mental powers were but little lower than those of the angels. Next to the angelic beings, the human family, formed in the image of God, were the noblest of His created works. But now, after the separation of Eve, human beings were a new and distinct order. Nothing like this had ever existed in all the depths of time.
The angels must have wondered – what did all this mean?
Do you remember what the controversy had been about? The position of Michael was in discussion. Was He like them or was He different? God had said that He was different, but He had never ever acted any differently from the angels except in that one thing – He could enter into that bright light which surrounded God Almighty without harm. Now they had their answer – He was obviously possessed of power that none of them had. He could give life to multitudes of very different creatures as well as the one that looked like them.
Yet this new one was quite different! She looked like Adam and yet she didn’t. She wasn’t as tall as he, she had a finer build, and looked softer. She spoke differently and radiated love more than he did. Although they couldn’t see it yet, she had some of his attributes more fully then he now had, while others they shared more or less equally. He also, retained some more fully than she. In other words, while they were different, they matched each other, and when joined in matrimony they regained the whole and would be good parents.
When the LORD presented Eve to Adam, the angels of God were witnesses to the ceremony. Then the angels heard the voice of the LORD God saying, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth". The penny dropped, and they knew that these two would somehow produce others in their own image and they would spread out all over the whole world. How different from all previous creatures!
This sinless pair wore no artificial garments, for they were clothed with a covering of light and glory, such as the angels wear. The Son of God created them for the Godhead’s own glory, planning that after a suitable period of test and trial the human family might be welcomed into the heavenly family, for it was His purpose to repopulate the universe with them. The vacancies made in the heavenly kingdom by the departure of Satan and his angels were to be filled by them!
This far the angels could see.
But there was a greater understanding just within their grasp.
As the bright ones among them pondered what had been revealed to them during that six day period the Holy Spirit gave little jabs and pointers and slowly it dawned on them that all this action was because Lucifer had queried the arch-angel’s position. So it obviously had to have something to do with Him as well.
So they watched and waited.
Many centuries later, the wisest man who ever lived (1 Kings 4:34) was communing with God and he was told a story, using the personification of Wisdom to represent the Son of God. We should listen carefully and prayerfully to the story, for the angels did.
Does not wisdom cry? And understanding put forth her voice?
2She stands in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths [the religious areas]. 3 She cries at the gates, at the entry of the city [in the business areas], at the coming in at the doors [in the homes], 4 "To you, O men, I call; and My voice is to the sons of man. 5 O you simple [believers], understand wisdom: and, you fools [unbelievers], be you of an understanding heart. 6 Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of My lips shall be right things [the truth].
7"For My mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to My lips. 8 All the words of My mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward [argumentative] or perverse [twisted] in them. 9 They are all plain to him that understands [the way of God], and right to them that find knowledge.
10"Receive My instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. 11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
12"I, Wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
13"The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward [argumentative] mouth, do I hate. 14 Counsel is Mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
15"By Me kings reign, and princes decree justice. 16 By Me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. 17 I love them that love Me; and those that seek Me early shall find Me. 18 Riches and honour are with Me; yea, durable [long-lasting] riches and righteousness.
19"My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and My revenue than choice silver. 20 I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment: 21 that I may cause those that love Me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
22"The LORD possessed Me in the beginning of His way, before His works of old. 23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. 24 When there were no depths, I WAS BROUGHT FORTH; when there were no fountains abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills [were] was I brought forth: 26 while as yet He had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
["No man has seen God [the Father] at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared [shown] Him". John 1:18.]
"When He prepared the heavens, I was there: when He set a compass upon the face of the depth: 2 when He established the clouds above: when He strengthened the fountains of the deep: 29 when He gave to the sea His decree, that the waters should not pass His commandment: when He appointed the foundations of the earth: 30 then I was by Him, as One brought up with Him: and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him; 31 rejoicing in the habitable part of His earth; and My delights were with the sons of men.
32"Now therefore hearken to Me, O you children: for blessed are they that keep My ways. 33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. 34 Blessed is the man that hears Me, watching daily at My gates, waiting at the posts of My doors [searching the word]. 35 For whoso finds Me finds life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
36"But he that sins against [rejects] Me wrongs his own soul: all they that hate Me love death".
Those who had watched the separation of Eve were astonished!
Those who had watched Eve deliver child after child, those who had seen the human race expanding more and more as time went by, now realised what they had seen! After thousands (maybe millions) of babies coming from this blessed creature called "woman" the puzzle was complete. She was the only creature in all the universe who could, in the power of God, recreate herself or her husband, girl or boy. What a blessing she was – what a blessing she had – to be able to picture the living God in one of His tenderest moments. This is why Satan hates her and works feverishly to downgrade and humiliate her whenever he can. But those who love God know that she has a special and unique place in God’s kingdom.(See endnote 3.)
It had all been a picture of where Michael had come from, and who He was. He was God!! God in another form – one which the Almighty called "My Son". Now they began to comprehend the family relationship in heaven as they had watched it on earth.
There were differences of course, but the similarities were sufficient for them to get the picture. Before God (their Father) could create them He had to be able to communicate with them. So He had separated Himself. Not quite as He had separated Eve from Adam, for the woman was not an exact copy of the man – in fact she had many features and characteristics which were different but which when combined with man’s made a complete whole.
But in the Son of God’s case He was the "express image" of the Father’s person and "the brightness of His glory". Hebrews 1:3. In fact, it was He who had suggested that the titles "father" and "son" would be great for humans also. Just as a human son has the characteristics of his father, so did the Son of God have those of His heavenly Father. Just as a human son is not the equal of his father and never indeed can be, although he can eventually match his father’s attributes, and even surpass them physically as time goes by, so the Son of God will always be in one sense inferior to His Father.
This is implied in Their family titles and expressed in the scripture.
Thus it is written,
1 Corinthians 15:
"For since by [a] man came death, by [a] Man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at His coming.
24"Then comes the end, when He shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when He shall have put down all [rebellion against] rule and all [usurped] authority and power. 25 For He must reign, till He has put all enemies under His feet.
26"The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
27"For He [the Father] has put ALL things under His [the Son’s] feet [to deal with the problems in this world]. But when He [the Father] says ALL things are put under Him [the Son], it is manifest [clear] that He [the Father] is excepted, which did put all things under Him.
28"And when all things shall be subdued to Him, then shall the Son also Himself be subject to Him that put all things under Him, that God [the Father] may be all in all".
Apart from that one difference, the Son is every inch God in a separate form, and thinks and behaves exactly as His Father does. Just before the resurrection of His friend, Lazarus, Jesus declared, "I am the resurrection, and the life". John 11:25. It is also written, "He that has the Son has life". 1 John 5:12. The divinity of Christ is the believer's assurance of eternal life. In Christ is LIFE, original, unborrowed, underived. "For as the Father has life in Himself; so has He given to the Son to have life in Himself; and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man". John 5:26-27.
Even in humanity He was able to say, "If you had known Me, you should have known My Father also: and from henceforth you know Him, and have seen Him". Philip said to Him, "LORD, show us the Father, and it suffices us". Jesus said to him, "Have I been so long time with you, and yet have you not known Me, Philip? He that has seen Me has seen the Father; and how say you then, ‘Show us the Father?' Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I speak not of Myself: but the Father that dwells in Me, He does the works". John 14:7-10.
In a description of Michael’s position, it is written, "But to the Son He[the Father] says, ‘Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your fellows. And, You, LORD, in the beginning have laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of Your hands: they shall perish; but You remain; and they all shall wax old as does a garment; and as a vesture shall You fold them up, and they shall be changed [into a new world]: but You are the same, and Your years shall not fail’." Hebrews 1:8-12.
In His human nature He had taken the position of an Eve and was willing to be a "help" fit for Him. Thus it is written, "And all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and has given to us the ministry of reconciliation[that’s our job]; to wit [in brief], that God was in Christ, reconciling the [people of the] world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them; and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech [beg] you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be you reconciled to God. For He [the Father] has made Him [the Son] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him". 2 Corinthians 5:18-21.
Now we should be able to see why it was very necessary that Eve be first made in Adam and then separated from him later.
How did we get all these details? Adam didn’t experience them because he was only created at the end of the six days, yet he told them to us in his "book". Genesis 5:1. He may have been told them by the Son of God during some of those visits "in the cool of the evening", or even by the angels as they visited, for they would have come often to see the newest additions to the family. What tales they must have seemed to him! What exhibitions of the power of love!
This why the beloved disciple wrote: "If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. He that believes on the Son of God[and acts on that belief] HAS THE WITNESS IN HIMSELF: he that believes not God has made Him a liar; because he believes not the record that God gave of His Son. And this is the record, that God has given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that has the Son has [everlasting] life; and he that has not the Son of God has not life. These things have I written to you that believe on the name [character] of the Son of God; that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may believe on the name of the Son of God". 1 John 5:9-13.

Regarding the earthly sanctuary, Moses was told;
18"And you shall make two cherubims [angels] of gold, of beaten work shall you make them, in the two ends of the Mercy Seat [which was a picture of God’s throne]. 19 And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the Mercy Seat shall you make the cherubims on the two ends thereof.
20"And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the Mercy Seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the Mercy Seat shall the faces of the cherubims be. 21 And you shall put the Mercy Seat above upon the ark [a box-like structure forming the base of the throne]; and in the ark you shall put the testimony [the Ten Commandments] that I shall give you.
22"And there I will meet with you, and I will commune with you from above the Mercy Seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give you in commandment to the children of Israel". Back
Note 2: (from page 4, and from my library)
Since the Spirit is the means by which we are to receive power, why do we not hunger and thirst for the gift of the Spirit? Why do we not talk of it, pray for it, and preach concerning it? The LORD is more willing to give the Holy Spirit to those who serve Him than parents are to give good gifts to their children. For the daily baptism of the Spirit every worker should offer his petition to God. Companies of Christian workers should gather to ask for special help, for heavenly wisdom, that they may know how to plan and execute wisely. Especially should they pray that God will baptize His chosen ambassadors in mission fields with a rich measure of His Spirit. The presence of the Spirit with God's workers will give the proclamation of truth a power that not all the honour or glory of the world could give.
It is not essential for us to be able to define just what the Holy Spirit is. Christ tells us that the Spirit is the Comforter, "the Spirit of truth, which proceeds from the Father". It is plainly declared regarding the Holy Spirit that, in His work of guiding men into all truth, "He shall not speak of Himself". John 15:26; 16:13.
The nature of the Holy Spirit is a mystery. Men cannot explain it, because the LORD has not revealed it to them. Men having fanciful views may bring together passages of Scripture and put a human construction on them, but the acceptance of these views will not strengthen the church. Regarding such mysteries, which are too deep for human understanding, silence is golden.
The office of the Holy Spirit is distinctly specified in the words of Christ: "When He is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment". John 16:8. It is the Holy Spirit that convicts of sin. If the sinner responds to the quickening influence of the Spirit, he will be brought to repentance and aroused to the importance of obeying the divine requirements.
To the repentant sinner, hungering and thirsting for righteousness, the Holy Spirit reveals the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. "He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it to you," Christ said. "He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said to you". John 16:14; 14:26. Back
Note 3:(from page 15.)
At the wedding in Cana, when Jesus said to His mother, "Woman, what have I
to do with you? My hour is not yet come", He was paying her a high compliment. John 2:4. This answer, abrupt as it seems to us, expressed no coldness or discourtesy. The Saviour's form of address to His mother was in accordance with Oriental custom. It was used toward persons to whom it was desired to show respect. Every act of Christ's earthly life was in harmony with the precept He Himself had given, "Honour your father and your mother." Exodus 20:12. On the cross, in His last act of tenderness toward His mother, Jesus again addressed her in the same way, as He committed her to the care of His best-loved disciple. John 19:26.
Both at the marriage feast and upon the cross, the love expressed in tone and look and manner interpreted His words. Back
